Moving house can be stressful at the best of times but you may be surprised to know that it is not just you that suffers. This article looks at how to make sure that your house move is as easy as possible for your pet dog.
Moving house is one of the most stressful things a person can do, but this can also be a very difficult time for pets. As any pet owner knows, dogs are much attuned to the mood of a household and they will pick up on times of upheaval. There are several ways however, that you can ensure that your move is as stress free for your dog as possible.
First of all make sure that your dog is micro chipped and registered with Petlog at your new address. Go to your nearest pet supplies store and get a new tag for their collar engraved with the new address. This way if your dog does go missing you can rest assured that they will be returned quickly.
On the day
On the day of the move, prevent your dog from becoming too distressed by keeping them in a quiet room with some familiar belongings. Leave packing their bed, toys and other equipment until the last possible moment. Alternatively, some people prefer to leave their pet with a neighbour, friend or kennel so that the dog does not become upset by strangers coming in and out of the house. This is entirely a matter of personal preference.
The journey
If they do not travel well it may be an idea to stop feeding them for a few hours before you set off. Make sure your car is well ventilated and that the dog is safe in either a crate or secured with a harness. On a long journey make frequent stops for toilet breaks and to give them water and dog food.
In your new home
As before, keep your dog in one room with their dog bed and any familiar toys whilst the furniture is moved into place. If you like you can get them a new toy or chew to settle them in. Do not wash the bedding for a couple of weeks to give your pet time to become accustomed to the new house. Your local pet supplies store or vet may also have a pheromone device which can calm some dogs down. Wherever possible, try to keep to normal routines by feeding and walking them at the same times every day. It is important to not give them any more or less attention than you would normally as this can make dogs anxious and might lead to behavioural problems.
Finally
Dog proof the garden to ensure your dog can?t escape and if this is not possible immediate;y then take your dog out on the lead until you are able to make the adjustments. You may find that your dog might have an ?accident? or two inside the house. This can be either because of anxiety or may be a ?marking? behaviour. Whatever the reason, deal with it as you would with a puppy- carefully cleaning to remove the smell and praising them when they go outdoors as expected.
By following these simple steps, you should ensure that your dog quickly becomes accustomed to the house and that you can enjoy your new home with your dog safe in the knowledge that they are happy and settled.
