A Quarter of a Million Downloads ? End of 2012 Metrics for Hunter Davis on the Google Play Store

When looking back on 2012, it was a pretty successful year for both myself, and Google. They released a hot new tablet, and their app store has done remarkably well. One of my personal successes was the open sourcing of all of my android apps and other software back in April. Now, at the end of 2012 I feel that in the spirit of open source software I should share all the metrics about my apps on the Play store. The bottom line is, things are going pretty well. Installs are on the rise, and I love sharing software with people.

You can view or download the embedded spreadsheet below. I?ve highlighted some interesting findings in the list directly below.

  • My apps have been downloaded from the Play store a total of 223,872 times.
  • My apps have (today) 27,508 active installs from the Play store.
  • The average number of installs per app is 3k.
  • The average active installs per app (today) is 410.
  • During 2012 I received 10 total emails from users of my apps requesting bug fixes. I responded to every one.
  • During 2012 I received 15 total emails for feature requests, I implemented 8 of them.
  • Since becoming a Play store developer in May 2011, I have published 68 apps. I have pulled one app and had one app suspended due to DMCA request by Atari (custom pong.)
  • All of my apps have crashed a total of 63 times. That?s less than one crash per year per app on average.
  • The #1 most downloaded app is ?Easy Cat Whistle? with 48K, followed by ?Easy Pest Control? with 17k, and a three way tie with ?Easy Side by Side?, ?Easy Graph Paper?, and ?Easy File Split and Join? each having about 10-11k.
  • The app with the most active installs is ?Easy Side by Side? with 3860, followed by ?Easy Cat Whistle? with 3459 and ?Easy Inventory? with 2629
  • The average rating for one of my apps is 3.6 (out of 5). The average number of people who actually rate an app is ten.
  • My one paid app (Super Whistle) took about two hours to complete and has been purchased 53 times, netting me ~40$
  • I make about 50$ monthly on in-app advertising during the summer months, and 100$ during the winter months (this is not captured in this document, only through my bank statements). That?s about 2 times as much as I made from my monthly book sales in 2012, but only 1/150th of my monthly salary from working 9-5 jobs in 2012. Do note however, that most of these apps haven?t been updated since I initially published them in 2011, and advertising revenue continues to slowly rise. This slowly increases the return on those hours spent writing the apps initially.

As you can see, as an Android developer, I still get significantly more financial return from my time investment by working for an established organization. Not that money should generally be the driving force in your career, but for most of us it weighs in significantly. Mobile developers are the hot commodity right now, and companies can?t hire them fast enough or compensate them highly enough. It?s a volatile and exciting market that once again won?t be the same in a year. It likely won?t even resemble what it was a year ago. Those who know how to navigate the choppy waters of new technologies can, as usual, write their own checks. That said, it?s always good to have another revenue stream.

There?s also something incredibly satisfying about sharing software with people, especially when it is open sourced.

French panel overturns 75 percent tax on ultrarich

(AP) ? Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France's highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair.

In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande's flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over ?1 million ($1.32 million).

The largely symbolic measure would have only hit a tiny number of taxpayers and brought in an estimated ?100 million to ?300 million - an insignificant amount in the context of France's roughtly ?85 billion deficit.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was quick to respond, saying in a statement following the decision the government would resubmit the measure to take the court's concerns into account. The court's ruling took issue not with the size of the tax, but with the way it discriminated between households depending on how incomes were distributed among its members. A household with two earners each making under ?1 million would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making ?1.2 million would have to pay.

The French government approved the tax in its most recent budget, amid criticism by some that it would do little to stem the country's mounting fiscal problems and would drive away the wealthiest citizens. Hollande's popularity, meanwhile, has been tanking as the country's unemployment continued its rise for the 19th straight month.

In recent weeks, Gerard Depardieu ? France's most famous actor ? announced his intention to turn in his French passport and move to a village in a tax-friendly Belgium.

Building Your Dream Home in Mexico ? Communication ...

I always say that when buying Mexico real estate, one of the key items for the buyers is to work with a?Mexico agent who offers excellent communication.? Good communication using all the technology we have out there now is a key factor in gaining the best end result ? a dream property in Mexico.? The same is true for the process of building a home in Mexico.

Mexico Real EstateIf property owners choose to work with a professional construction coordinator, one of the most important points which they will have to consider is that of communication and tracking progress from a distance.

Communication

A growing number of construction professionals in the Riviera Maya (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, etc.), for example, work primarily with non-Mexican clients who are out of the country for most of the construction process.? Architect Gian Luca says that he has had numerous clients where he has actually never met them in person!? While most property owners will want to meet these professionals in person, it demonstrates the amount of flexibility and ease of communication that has developed.

Most professionals who work with such clients make heavy use of the internet, often offering a secure system with a password where clients can review all details of the construction progress.? These reports include:

Mexico Real Estate

  • up-to-date expenditures
  • pictures of current progress
  • commentaries and notes

In such a system, clients can log in any time they want and review the details.? Reports are usually made at regular intervals ? weekly and biweekly are common.? With cell phones, laptops, digital cameras and digital video cameras on site, the construction professionals can contact the client immediately in the event of important news or change (see below), offering pictures of any advancement or situation immediately; clients can also make nearly immediate contact to clarify any questions.

building your home in MexicoWebcams and programs like Skype also make video conferencing free.

For those who are used to using the latest internet services, the process is fairly straight forward.? For those who aren?t, as Hawthorne Flaherty, who works primarily in the?Tulum real estate area, says, ?Sometimes it?s a little more laborious, but once you get the swing of it, it?s not so hard.?

Of course, those who aren?t comfortable with the latest technology can request to have updates by phone call and e-mails for pictures and numbers.

Monroe's Jewish Wedding "Cover Up"

Getty Images

Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller

Marilyn Monroe has been dead 50 years, but she continues to fascinate.

Classified files released by the FBI in response to a request by the Associated Press reveal claims that the actress?s Jewish marriage ceremony was ?a cover up.?

Monroe married Jewish playwright Arthur Miller in June 1956, but a redacted FBI document quotes an anonymous source that informed the New York Daily News that their religious ceremony was a ?cover up??presumably for Monroe and Miller?s alleged Communist activities. Miller ?was still a member of the CP (communist party) and was their cultural front man,? the source was quoted as saying. The source also alleges that Monroe was drifting into the Communist Party orbit, and her production company was filled with Communists and funneling money to the party.

Parts of the FBI?s files on Monroe, dating back to 1955 and continuing on through investigations of her 1962 suicide, can be seen on the FBI?s The Vault website, which posts the agency?s records on celebrities, government officials, spies and criminals.

Japan's new government sticks to three-year nuclear safety goal

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's new government said on Friday it hoped to stick to a three year deadline to decide whether to restart all nuclear reactors after safety checks, despite the country's newly formed nuclear regulator saying the deadline was impossible to meet.

Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who is also responsible for energy policy, said reactors would be restarted as units received the all-clear from the atomic regulator.

"We will rely on the NRA (Nuclear Regulation Authority) to judge safety from an expert point of view and will not restart ones as long as safety is not confirmed," Motegi told a news conference.

NRA Chairman Shunichi Tanaka said in an interview in the Asahi newspaper on Friday that completing safety checks within the three-year timeframe set by new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be impossible to meet.

All but two of Japan's 50 reactors remain switched off after an earthquake and tsunami caused meltdowns and explosions at the Fukushima Daiichi station in northeastern Japan in March 2011.

Atomic energy supplied about 30 percent of Japan's needs before Fukushima, but since the disaster support for nuclear power has plummeted.

Abe's government, which was installed on Wednesday after a landslide election victory, has said it will take 10 years to decide on the best energy mix for Japan.

"We have not decided on the policy of going zero-nuclear by the 2030s," Motegi said, referring to the previous government's policy.

An order from former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda to restart the two reactors now operating in western Japan prompted the biggest demonstrations in the country in decades and contributed to his election defeat this month.

The NRA, which still needs to draft new rules on safety, has signaled it will take a tougher stance on nuclear stations situated over possible seismic fault lines and prevent risky plants from restarting.

If a review of a faultline under the operating reactors at the Ohi station shows it is active, the NRA will request a halt for the units, operated by Kansai Electric Power Co, Tanaka said in the interview.

A panel of NRA experts this week confirmed its assessment that there are active faults under the Higashi Dori nuclear plant in northern Japan, which is owned by Tohoku Electric Power Co. The assessment means the NRA is unlikely allow the plant to restart.

Police said the man had just picked up an acquaintance from a parking lot near Freret Street and Law Road shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday, when his passenger brandished a handgun and demanded money.

The driver of the car jumped out and started running, while the alleged gunman took off with the victim's car.

According to New Orleans Police spokesman Officer Garry Flot, the victim later told police he knew his alleged assailant only as "Freddy." Flot said the victim's car has since been found but that no arrests have been made yet.

Childhood Obesity Rates Declining in the US According to New Study

A national study? conducted by the Centers for Disease? Control and Prevention has found that obesity is declining among 2 to 4 year olds from low income families. If this trend continues then parents and health advocates like myself are doing the right thing and childhood obesity has finally passed its peak.

Researchers used height and weight measurements taken from 27 million children who were participating in the federal Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) from 1998 to 2010.? The obesity rates among those children declined to 14.9 percent in 2010.

According to the report a 3-year-old-boy of average height (about 3 feet), is obese if he weighs 37 pounds or more and and extremely obese if he weighs 44 pounds or more.

?The declines we?re presenting here are pretty modest, but it is a change in direction,? said Heidi M. Blanck, one of the study?s authors and the acting director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the disease centers. ?We were going up before. And this data shows we?re going down. For us, that?s pretty exciting.?

There are several different theories as to why childhood obesity is on the decline. Breast feeding has increased since 2000.? Breast milk is the best nutrition for infants 12 months and under and is proven to help children obtain a healthier weight. The Federal Trade Commission found that companies are spending less money on food marketing to children, which may also have a positive impact on childhood obesity rates. Data from 48 major food and beverage marketers also found that cereals marketed to children ages 2 to 11 had about a gram less sugar per serving in 2009 than in 2006 and slightly more whole grain. The WIC program also made significant changes and is providing more funding for fresh produce and less for sugary juice beverages.?

I am hopeful that we are winning this fight against childhood obesity in the United States.? Federal programs like, Let's Move and WIC are doing an excellent job educating families on the importance of feeding their children healthy and nutritious foods.? The food and beverage industry is offering healthier products with less sugar.? Educational materials including books, websites, social media, and PSA are more readily available to families of all income levels.? Our society needs to make these changes permanent. The future of our children depends on it.

India rape victim in Singapore; PM pledges action

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pledged Thursday to take action to protect the nation's women while the young victim of a gang rape on a New Delhi bus was flown to Singapore for treatment of severe internal injuries.

The Dec. 16 rape and brutal beating of the 23-year-old student triggered widespread protests, including a march on Thursday, demanding a government crackdown on the daily harassment Indian women face, ranging from groping to severe violence. Some protesters have called for the death penalty or castration for rapists, who under current laws face a maximum punishment of life in prison.

Rape victims rarely press charges because of social stigma and fear they will be accused of inviting the attack. Many women say they structure their lives around protecting themselves and their daughters from attack.

Singh's government set up two committees in response to the protests. One, looking into speeding up sexual assault trials, has already received 6,100 email suggestions. The second will examine what lapses might have contributed to the rape ? which took place on a moving bus that passed through police checkpoints ? and suggest measures to improve women's safety.

"Let me state categorically that the issue of safety and security of women is of the highest concern to our government," Singh said at a development meeting. He urged officials in India's states to pay special attention to the problem.

"There can be no meaningful development without the active participation of half the population, and this participation simply cannot take place if their security and safety is not assured," he said.

The rape victim arrived in Singapore on an air ambulance Thursday and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Mount Elizabeth hospital, renowned for multi-organ transplant facilities.

On Thursday night she remained in "extremely critical condition" as a team of specialists worked to stabilize her, Dr. Kelvin Loh, the hospital's chief executive officer, said in a statement. Before arriving in Singapore, she had already undergone three abdominal surgeries and suffered cardiac arrest, he said.

India's Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in a statement that the government, which is funding and overseeing the victim's treatment, had decided to send her abroad on the recommendation of her doctors.

"Despite the best efforts of our doctors, the victim continues to be critical and her fluctuating health remains a big cause of concern to all of us," he said.

Her family was also being sent to Singapore to be with her during her treatment, which could last weeks, he said.

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters demanding safer public transportation for women and the resignation of Delhi's police commissioner tried to march to the major India Gate traffic circle in central Delhi before being stopped by police in riot gear manning barricades. Protesters carried signs reading, "Immediately end rape culture in India" and "Zero tolerance of violence against women."

Protests have shut down the center of the capital for days since the rape. Police quashed some of the demonstrations with tear gas, water cannons and baton charges.

One police officer died Tuesday after collapsing during a weekend protest. Police said an autopsy showed the officer had a heart attack that could have been caused by injuries suffered during violence at the protest. An Associated Press journalist at the scene said the officer was running toward the protesters with a group of police when he collapsed on the ground and began frothing at the mouth and shaking. Two protesters rushed to the officer to try to help him. Police charged eight people with murder in the death of the policeman.

Police said the rape victim was traveling on the evening of Dec. 16 with a male friend on a bus when they were attacked by six men who gang-raped her and beat the couple with iron rods before stripping them and dumping them on a road. All six suspects in the case have been arrested, police said.

Also Thursday, Ratanjit Singh, a junior minister in the home ministry, said the government would create a database of convicted rapists and publish it, along with their photos, on the ministry website to shame them, according to the Press Trust of India.

Colleges help students clean up online profile

2 hrs.

BUFFALO, N.Y. --?Samantha Grossman wasn't always thrilled with the impression that emerged when people Googled her name.

"It wasn't anything too horrible," she said. "I just have a common name. There would be pictures, college partying pictures, that weren't of me, things I wouldn't want associated with me."

So before she graduated from Syracuse University last spring, the school provided her with an online tool that allowed her to put her best Web foot forward. Now when people Google her, they go straight to a positive image ? professional photo, cum laude degree and credentials ? that she credits with helping her land a digital advertising job in New York.

"I wanted to make sure people would find the actual me and not these other people," she said.

Syracuse, Rochester, and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore are among the universities that offer such online tools to their students free of charge, realizing ill-considered Web profiles of drunken frat parties, prank videos and worse can doom graduates to a lifetime of unemployment ? even if the pages are somebody else's with the same name.

It's a growing trend based on studies showing that most employers Google prospective hires and nearly all of them won't bother to go past the first page of results. The online tools don't eliminate the embarrassing material, they just put the graduate's most flattering, professional profile front and center.

"These students have been comfortable with the intimate details of their lives on display since birth," said Lisa Severy, president-elect of the National Career Development Association and director of career services at the University of Colorado-Boulder, which does not offer the service.

"The first item on our 'five things to do before you graduate' list is 'clean up your online profile,'" she said. "We call it the grandma test ? if you don't want her to see it, you probably don't want an employer to, either."

Managing your online presence
After initially supplying BrandYourself accounts to graduating seniors, Syracuse University this year struck a deal with the company ? begun by a trio of alumni ? to offer accounts to all of its undergraduate and graduate students and alumni at no additional charge. About 25,000 people have access to it so far.

"It's becoming more and more important for students to be aware of and able to manage their online presence, to be able to have strong, positive things come up on the Internet when someone seeks them out," said Mike Cahill, Syracuse's career services director.

Online reputation repair companies have been around for at least a couple of years, often charging hundreds or thousands of dollars a year to arrange for good results on search engine result pages. BrandYourself, which normally charges $10 a month for an account, launched two years ago as a less expensive, do-it-yourself alternative after co-founder Pete Kistler ran into a problem with his own name.

"He couldn't get an internship because he was getting mistaken for a drug dealer with the same name," said co-founder Patrick Ambron. "He couldn't even get calls back and found out that was the problem."

An April survey of 2,000 hiring managers from CareerBuilder found nearly two in five companies use social networking sites to research job candidates and 11 percent said they planned to start. A third of the hiring managers who said they research candidates reported finding something like a provocative photo or evidence of drinking or drug use that cost the candidate a job.

"We want our students and alumni actively involved in shaping their online presence," said Johns Hopkins Career Center Director Mark Presnell. Students are encouraged to promote positive, professional content that's easily found by employers, he said.

BrandYourself works by analyzing search terms in a user's online profile to determine, for example, that a LinkedIn account might rank 25th on Google searches of the user's name. The program then suggests ways to boost that ranking. The software also provides alerts when an unidentified result appears on a user's first page or if any links rise or fall significantly in rank.

A professional image
Nati Katz, a public relations strategist, views his presence online as a kind of virtual storefront that he began carefully tending while in graduate school at Syracuse.

Google his name and up pops his LinkedIn page with a listing of the jobs he's held in digital media and the "500+ connections" badge of honor. His Facebook account is adorned with Katz smiling over an elegant Thanksgiving dinner table. There are a couple of professional profiles and his Tumblr link, one after another on the first page of results and all highlighting his professional experience.

Before his 2011 graduation, he took the university up on its offer of the BrandYourself account and said it gave him a leg up with potential employers and internship supervisors.

"Fortunately, I didn't have to deal with anything negative under my profile," said Katz, who used the reputation website BrandYourself.com while pursuing dual degrees in public relations and international affairs. "What I was trying to form was really a nice, clean, neat page, very professional."?

Russian pipeline blast, quake strike 2014 Olympics host Sochi

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A gas pipeline blast followed by a mild earthquake has struck Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi, which will host the 2014 Winter Olympics, a local government spokeswoman told Reuters on Wednesday.

Irina Gogoleva of Russia's Emergencies Ministry said no one was hurt and there was no apparent damage to the city's infrastructure after a 5.2 magnitude earthquake was reported at 0242 local time on Wednesday (2242 GMT on Tuesday).

"The Emergencies Ministry servicemen scoured through the city districts, bridges and electrical cables, there was no damage," Gogoleva said, adding that the epicentre of the quake was some 150 kilometres (93 miles) off Sochi in the Black Sea.

In an unrelated incident, a gas pipeline that feeds a local power station exploded a couple of hours before the quake.

Gogoleva said the power plant had switched to fuel oil and the city was receiving electrical power. She said the reason for the blast was unknown.

Sochi, the first Russian city to have been awarded the Winter Olympics, is located on the coast close to Georgia, with whom Russia fought a brief war in 2008 over two breakaway regions. The wider volatile Caucasus region is a major source of political tension.

(AP) ? The U.S. Treasury Department will begin taking steps to delay hitting the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit on Dec. 31.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a letter Wednesday to congressional leaders that the department will use accounting measures to save approximately $200 billion, which could keep the government from reaching the limit for about two months.

The move comes as President Barack Obama and the GOP congressional leadership are locked in negotiations over how to avoid a series of tax increases and spending cuts, known as the "fiscal cliff," that are scheduled to take effect in the new year.

Obama has sought to include an increase in the borrowing limit in the talks. But Speaker John Boehner and other Republican leaders have demanded concessions in return. The negotiations hit a stalemate last week. Obama and lawmakers are returning to Washington this week to resume talks.

Geithner says the negotiations over tax and spending policies make it difficult to predict how long he can delay reaching the borrowing limit.

The borrowing limit is the amount of debt the government can pile up. The government accumulates debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from Social Security revenue.

In 2011, Congress raised the limit to nearly $16.4 trillion from $14.3 trillion. Three decades ago, the national debt was $908 billion. But Washington spent more than it took in, and the debt rose steadily ? surpassing $1 trillion in 1982, then $5 trillion in 1996. It reached $10 trillion in 2008 as the financial crisis and recession dried up tax revenue and as the government spent more on unemployment benefits and other programs.

In August 2011, the rating agency Standard & Poor's stunned the world by stripping the U.S. government of its prized AAA bond rating because it feared that America's dysfunctional political system couldn't deliver credible plans to reduce the federal government's debt. S&P decried American "political brinksmanship" and concluded that "the differences between political parties have proven to be extraordinarily difficult to bridge."

A year and a half later, the two political parties are still as deadlocked as ever.

Despite S&P's warnings and the political stalemate, investors still want U.S. Treasurys. Given economic turmoil in Europe and uncertainty elsewhere, U.S. government debt and U.S. dollars look like the safest bet around.

That is why the interest rate, or yield, on 10-year Treasury notes has fallen from 2.58 Aug. 5, 2011 to 1.75 percent Wednesday.

Former President George H.W. Bush in intensive care

Former President George H.W. Bush continues to fight a stubborn fever in the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital.

"Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition," Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath revealed in a prepared statement. "Doctors at Methodist continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment. The president is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family."

McGrath earlier told ABC affiliate KTRK that the former president was awake and joking with doctors, but had yet to respond to medication designed to reduce the fever.

Bush, 88, has been in the intensive care unit in Houston's Methodist Hospital since Sunday, and hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was brought to the hospital with a bronchitis-like cough. A hospital statement released on Dec. 13 predicted the former president would be discharged before Christmas.

Hospital Media spokesman David Bricker told ABC News that Houston Methodist Hospital will be releasing an updated statement on Bush's condition, but could not provide a timeline for the release and added that such information would be revealed when doctors felt it was appropriate and in accordance with the wishes of the Bush family.

President Obama reportedly was being updated on Bush's condition but hadn't spoken directly with the Bush family.

A young Navy fighter pilot during WWII and former CIA director, Bush developed a warm relationship with his successor, Bill Clinton, teaming up to raise money for Asian tsunami victims in 2004 and then again in 2005 for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Building an Online Home-based Business - ???????, ??????

27 Dec 2012

The notion of operating an online business from home is very beautiful. We realize that job security isn?t what it was previously, with the effect that more and more people wish to manage their particular economic success by establishing a business and working at home. Nevertheless the world of online selling could seem vast and overwhelming, now how do you get started and steer clear of the pitfalls?Ecommerce From Home? When I started out selling online the buzzword was ?e commerce.? In reality, in the past around the time of the dotcom boom everyone was placing ?e? before almost everything related to the internet to make it seem nice. Business on the internet? Let us set an ?e? before it and call it ?ebusiness? or ?ecommerce.? It all seemed straightforward back then: An online business is just like a real shop with a storefront; people ?enter into ? your shop and set things inside their shopping cart application then buy them. Affiliate programs had not actually flourished in the past and internet marketing was very much based on simple banner ads. One outcome of all this concentrate on major ?ebusiness? was that it could be a little offending for people planning to have a tiny business working from home. Just like the whole concept of finding a web store was complicated and only actually for established businesses. But, fortunately it looked, the problem is very different today. The internet is currently exploding with ?micro-businesses? building a combined income of millions of dollars, all from the convenience of their own houses. This presents large options but also a competitive and challenging marketplace.Thinking SmallThe concept of considering small about your web business may seem completely back-to-front. By ?thinking little? I am talking about ?thinking niche.? Find the proper niche product( s) and you will find a spot also within the marketplace we have explained. Take to contemplating it this way: If you?ve not started yet you really have a benefit over other established firms. How can that be? Well, these established organizations may have railroaded themselves into promoting the same products and services which they often have done ? and, often, with the same limited areas. You, but, are a gleaming new free broker, available to choosing to provide whatever products you consider to function as the most acceptable (and, severely, the most successful) for the business.Selling on EbaySelling items on Ebay can be a great way to get going in online business. It?s simple to begin and you may not need certainly to concern yourself with making your own personal online shop. Large and highly-profitable businesses are created by many home workers simply by selling items on E-bay. But Ebay isn?t the complete story. If you are actually devoted to an extremely market item you might see that it makes sense to have your own personal online store. And remember that the more niche your product the faster and easier it?ll be to build your website since you will just need to list several services and products and maybe not spend time photographing and listing 1000s of different products. Trust in me, maintaining a web site with a good thousand goods uses up lots of time. On another hand maintaining an internet site where you are offering only around 1 to 20 specific products and services will be a lot easier.Picture the SceneMaybe it?s challenging for you to picture yourself a home based job on an online business, selecting your own hours and making a reasonable managing no blustering boss breathing down your throat. The typical world of work can make people ?institutionalized? so they believe it is extremely tough to start to see the way out and imagine a fresh future for themselves and their own families. However the beauty to build your personal online business is that you could get it done in small ways. You do not need to leave your task before getting started. You can ?check the water? by performing a little bit of E-bay selling or creating a little, template-based WordPress site selling a couple of items of your choice.Getting Your Tactics RightMaybe techniques and strategic thinking don?t come naturally to you. That?s great ? the same might be said of plenty of other highly productive internet businesspeople. You may not need certainly to create your own tactics. Sometimes it is following a strategy and being reliable that produces the big difference, instead of discovering your own personal absolutely unique strategy. Try borrowing some ideas from others and observe how you obtain on with these before spending months coming up with a killer master plan.

Treatment options for Vein diseases - ArticlesWide.com

If you have any type of vein disease or have problems dealing with issues such as Spider Veins or Varicose Veins you understand that it is a health issue that is not fun or enjoyable. This issue is a problem for many. In fact, about 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. The good news is that solutions are available. Thanks to new medical technology and years of research on everything from Deep Venous Thrombosis to Spider Veins, a lot of vein problems that are so commonly suffered in the United States can get treated well.

There are a multitude of treatments that are available for Vein Disease and it is up to you to decide which one will have the greatest impact on helping out your cause. The doctor that you visit in your initial appointment to discuss treatment options will go over all of the potential options available. Below, we have analyzed various treatment options that are available to people today and have gone over their advantages and disadvantages. Each option has unique benefits and drawbacks and it is ultimately up to you to decide, but based on the lists below, you should gain better knowledge as what treatment option will best suite your specific needs.

The first option is a procedure called Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a safe and proven non-surgical treatment for small or medium-sized varicose veins and is best for the treatment for spider veins. A tiny needle is used to implement a sclerosing solution into the target vein. This solution shuts it down the vein by irritating the lining of it.

Another option is called Endovenous laser Treatment (EVLT). This procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for veins that are located beneath the skins surface which are not working properly due to malfunctioning valves. The procedure involves the insertion of a tiny laser fiber into the vein, which seals the vein shut so it eventually collapses and fades from the surface of the skin.

The next option available is VNUS. This is a new procedure utilizes radiofrequency waves created by an electrode to close the vein. It closes the vein by heating the vein wall causing contraction of the vein. The VNUS Closure procedure has very little discomfort associated with it and yields a typically high degree of success.

Microphlebectomy is a procedure that is also commonly referred to as ambulatory phlebectomy. This is a type of surgery commonly used to remove large bulging veins. Many times, varicose veins near the surface of the skin are too large to treat with Sclerotherapy and are too small to treat with laser ablation. In these cases, this procedure is recommended to treat unsightly or painful leg veins close to the skins surface. Even though this is an invasive surgery, the risks associated are minimal.

As you see above, there is a great deal of options available to you for treatment of Vein Disease. Make sure you go over the options thoroughly and choose the treatment that fits your needs the best!

Gov. Quinn Welcomes Health Insurance 'Co-Op'

CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is welcoming the news that a nonprofit organization plans to offer health insurance in the state starting in 2014.

The new nonprofit -- called Land of Lincoln Health -- announced last week it is applying for a state license and has received a $160 million federal loan to begin operations.

In a statement Monday, Quinn called the announcement "another positive step to provide the people of Illinois more choices" in health care.

President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law created a category of insurance carriers called Consumer Operated and Oriented Plans, or "co-ops."

Land of Lincoln Health was incorporated by the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council. It's the first co-op in Illinois to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Health Care - Acne, Fitness, Diabetes Center Advice and Tips ...

If you have personal experience with arthritis, you should know that it is difficult to deal with. If you have accurate information and honest advice, however, it becomes much simpler to manage the condition. Read this article for tips on how to control your symptoms.

Cigarettes can cause flare-ups of your arthritis, and also contribute to loss of flexibility. Giving up smoking for good may be very difficult, but when you see how much it exacerbates your arthritis symptoms, the trade-off may be worth it.

You need to eat nutritious meals to be healthy, and it is very important when you have arthritis. There are a number of essential foodstuffs that can help the body to perform at its optimum, and for arthritis sufferers this is doubly important. Items such as fresh produce, lean meats and healthy oils (such as olive) should be regularly consumed. The additional spark will give better energy levels, and these can be put to good use keeping the arthritis symptoms under control.

Alternate between movement and rest, but keep a steady rhythm. Arthritis can be difficult! Get some rest, but do not stay inactive for too long. Taking frequent breaks helps ease joint pain and physical stress. Do not stop doing normal activities, because you can create stiff joints and tense muscles that can be hard to overcome.

While it may seem unbelievable, arthritis pain can sometimes be alleviated by calm and relaxing music. This type of music relaxes your body, and therefore eases aches and pains arthritis can cause. If you are suffering from insomnia because of your arthritis, the music may also aid in sending you to sleep.

Limit meat intake and eat plenty of vegetables. Studies have shown that vegetarians afflicted with arthritis suffer less swelling, inflammation, and pain than other arthritis sufferers that include meat in their diets. If you simply cannot bear to cut meat from your diet, compromise and fill half of each meal with nutritious vegetable sides.

Make changes to your home to help minimize discomfort. Sometimes it is small details that need attention. Think about getting larger objects so you can have a better grip on them, for instance pens or drawer handles. By supplying yourself with adapted, accessible tools, you will automatically lessen your pain and improve the quality of your life.

Have your physician evaluate you for vitamin deficiencies. If you aren?t getting enough nutrients like vitamin B-12 or iron, you can see a greater arthritic reaction. By monitoring these levels and keeping them in check, you can avoid painful flare-ups.

If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, it is important that you get enough Vitamin D. While not completely understood, research shows that vitamin D deficiency is linked to rheumatoid arthritis. All you need is a bit of sunlight exposure to get the proper dosage of vitamin D.

Keep track of the progression of your condition. Note when and how you experience the pain, its severity, and what you?re doing to ease it. Also note your medications, whether you took or skipped them, and other key details for your doctor. Your physician must be aware of these things in order for him or her to help you.

Arthritis is a common condition that too many people suffer from. Once you are aware of the treatment options for arthritis, the condition will seem much more manageable.

Film Review: Les Mis?rables | OregonLive.com

It was as inevitable as the French Revolution. "Les Mis?rables," the worldwide smash stage musical based on Victor Hugo's epic 19th-century novel, has finally come to the screen. This lavish production comes equipped with a bevy of movie stars singing their hearts out, but lacks in some crucial ways the cohesion and spectacle of the live performance with which it will assuredly be compared.

It tells, of course, the decades-spanning tale of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), the long-suffering parolee who, after serving years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, makes a new, prosperous life for himself, only to be haunted by the pursuit of the relentless Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe). After realizing he has contributed to the misfortune of the doomed Fantine (Anne Hathaway), Valjean vows to look after her young daughter as if she were his own. Things come to a head during a Parisian street uprising, when Valjean tries to protect both the now-grown Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) and her lover Marius (Eddie Redmayne).

None of the performers embarrass themselves, despite the fact that all the singing was reportedly done live, without any post-production dubbing. Jackman, Crowe, and Hathaway have all shown off their pipes in the past, and Hathaway's single-shot, close-up performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" is a highlight. Seyfried and Redmayne are their equals (in Crowe's case, his betters), as is Samantha Barks, one of the few holdovers from the stage production, as the pining ?ponine.

Despite this, the film does tend to drag. This may be heresy, but both Valjean and Javert are wet blankets, one with his continual self-sacrifice and moping, the other with his imperturbable, robotic pursuit of legal justice. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter provide some needed, but awkward, comic relief as Cosette's venal foster parents, though they seem to have wandered in from a "Sweeney Todd" production next door.

The narrative moves in fits and starts, slowing to a crawl during the songs and leaping forward dizzyingly at other times. And the cinematic technique of director Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech") tries to replicate the appeal which has drawn millions to stage performances, but comes up more than a little short. This version of "Les Mis?rables" simply doesn't sing.

5 Top Customer Service Articles For the Week of December 24 ...

Each week I read a number of customer service articles from various online resources. Here are my top five picks from last week. I have added my comment about each article and would like to hear what you think too.

Zappos? 10-Hour Long Customer Service Call Sets Record

(Huffington Post) It appears Zappos has a unique definition of good customer service. The online shoe and apparel retailer broke its personal record for longest customer service phone call on December 8 with a conversation that lasted 10 hours and 29 minutes, spokesperson Diane Coffey stated in an email to The Huffington Post. Shockingly, Zappos doesn?t view the incident as bad news.

My Comment: Zappos.com is one of my favorite companies, and the story in this article is one of the many reasons. Okay, maybe a ten hour customer service call is extravagant, but I still love it for at least two reasons. The obvious is stated in the article in that ?wowing? the customer is one of the Zappos.com core values. The other lesson comes in the story. This story has been written about numerous times in the last week, since it happened. It is now a customer service legend. I put it in the same category as the Nordstrom legendary story about the man who returned a set of tires to a Nordstrom store. These legendary stories help create define the culture of a business. We should all strive to create these types of legendary stories.

What Painting Houses Taught Me About Loyalty: A Primer In Three Lessons By Bryan Pearson

(Fast Company) Some pieces of wisdom hold true for any business. Three tips for long-lasting loyalty.

My Comment: It?s amazing the life lessons we learn when we?re younger in our summer jobs. And, this lesson comes from a can of paint! What a great metaphor for how to create loyal customers. There are no short cuts here. Don?t paint over the cracks, have a good base coat and use the right equipment. Great lesson!

Customer Loyalty: Is it a Behavior? Or an Attitude? by Don Peppers

(LinkedIn) What does it mean when we say that a customer is ?loyal? to a brand? Does it mean they?re a repeat purchaser of the brand? Or does it simply mean they like it? In other words, are we talking about physical actions, or does ?loyalty? refer to a state of mind?

My Comment: There is a big difference between loyal behavior and a loyal customer.? Sometimes people appear to be loyal to a product, but in fact use the product because they have to.? Given the opportunity to do business with another company, they would.? Then there are people who truly love your product ? and would be willing to recommend you to others.? Perhaps we can label these two groups as users and evangelizers.

Listening to Customers & Employees During Times of Change by Annette Franz Gleneicki

(CX Journey) In the last few months, I?ve spoken to clients and prospects who recently went through, or are in the midst of, some very transitional times as a result of acquisitions and mergers. They?ve questioned whether they would continue collecting feedback from customers during these times for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to: concern for what customers will say about the organization.

My Comment: It?s always important to listen to your customers (and your employees), and especially during times of change. If you are being sold, merging with another company, changing management ? virtually any type of change ? this will be felt by the customer. Best to listen to what they are saying to ensure their experience is consistent, if not even better than they have had in the past.

How to Build Customer Loyalty in 2013 by Geoffrey James

(Inc) As we enter 2013, the business world remains in a state of uncertainty. Will the economy recover? Will new taxes be in place? Regardless of what happens, your key to success will lie in one thing: customer loyalty.

My Comment: How to build loyalty? Customers can buy from anyone. If you can become their ?partner? and not just a ?vendor? you have crossed over from a casual customer to a loyal customer. Partnership is loyalty on steroids. It?s when you think of your customers? problems as your problems. It?s when you care more about your relationship than any short-term sale. It?s when, as this article clearly points out, you are more than just a vendor!
