Thinkpad Helix appears on Lenovo's Israeli website, lends hope to a stateside or Euro arrival

It wasn't long ago that our Chinese language website reported on the Lenovo Thinkpad Helix, a convertible ultrabook that launched alongside other models, but seemed destined for China only. Now, it looks like Israeli folks might also get the device, as it popped up recently on the company's website there. We noted that it would carry Windows 8, an 11.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 detachable IPS touchscreen, NFC 3G module, stylus, 10-hour battery life and optional Core i7 processor for the top model. That would make it a pretty potent ultrabook, let alone a tablet -- making us hope that it'll power its way over to our shores.

Obama warns Americans storm 'is not yet over'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seeking to project command in a crisis, President Barack Obama told storm-stricken residents along the East Coast that "America is with you" but warned that the disaster "is not yet over."

As the countdown to Election Day reached the one week mark, Obama immersed himself Tuesday in his official duties. He convened conference calls with state and local officials, held briefings in the White House Situation Room and dropped by Red Cross headquarters in Washington.

"My instructions to the federal agencies has been, 'Do not figure out why we can't do something; I want you to figure out how we do something,'" Obama said. "There's no excuse for inaction at this point."

Obama said there still were risks of flooding and downed power lines and called the storm "heartbreaking for the nation."

The White House also announced that Obama was scrapping a third consecutive day of campaigning and instead would travel to New Jersey on Wednesday to view the devastation from superstorm Sandy. His tour guide was to be New Jersey's Republican governor, Chris Christie, a supporter of GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Christie's political affiliations, however, didn't stop him from showering praise on Obama for the president's response to the huge storm that battered his state and several others.

"The president has been all over this and he deserves great credit," Christie told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." ''I've been on the phone with him, like I said, yesterday personally three times. He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call him if I need anything, and he absolutely means it. It's been very good working with the president."

With Obama back in Washington, the White House, which had taken a backseat to the presidential campaign for months, suddenly was the hub of activity. Aides described the staff, especially those who had been sidelined by the re-election campaign, as reinvigorated by the challenge of coordinating the storm response.

Obama made phone calls to local officials well into the early morning hours Tuesday. He also convened a conference call with 13 governors and seven mayors in states impacted by the storm.

The officials, speaking in geographical order from south to north, briefed the president on the storm's impact and the status of recovery efforts in their areas. The president played the role of facilitator, trying to arrange for officials in places where the storm's impact was minor to send resources to hard-hit areas.

Obama planned to turn his attention back to campaigning Thursday, with stops scheduled in Nevada, Colorado and Ohio. Campaign officials said the president may try to make up for lost time by adding more events to an already busy schedule this weekend and into next week.

Indiana hoping to match hype of being No. 1

(AP) ? Jordan Hulls walks into Assembly Hall wearing a T-shirt that reads "How Sweet It Is," a phrase intended to celebrate Indiana's return to the NCAA tournament regional semifinals last spring.

This fall, those words have a whole new meaning.

After spending three years in the abyss and another year trying to prove themselves, the Hoosiers are ranked No. 1 and squarely in the discussion about the national championship.

Indiana is back. Finally.

"It could be a really special year and everybody is anxious to start seeing what this team is capable of," junior guard Victor Oladipo said with his usual exuberance. "It's the stuff you dream about, trying to chase this one goal that everyone is trying to chase."

Outsiders certainly believe Indiana has the combination to do that this season.

For the first time since 1979-80, and only the third time in school history, the Hoosiers open this season ranked No. 1. Sophomore center Cody Zeller is the early favorite to be the Big Ten player of the year, and the campaigning to make him this year's national player of the year is in full swing, too. Indiana basketball tickets are again one of the hottest items in the state.

Don't believe it?

Eager fans are so excited about this season they filled every seat inside Assembly Hall for an open practice Oct. 20 two hours before it began. Coach Tom Crean apologized to those who were turned away.

"It makes you appreciate winning that much more," said Hulls, a senior guard and one of the team leaders. "But it is kind of crazy to think about how far we've come."

Crean was hired in April 2008 to clean things up after an embarrassing NCAA phone-call scandal tainted the school's pristine image and gutted the roster. He promised to restore the program's image, its national prestige and to win championships with a team that would make everyone proud.

Nobody expected the long road back to be easy, least of all Crean, who had only two returning players, both walk-ons, in that first season.

Crean remembers it well. Indiana crashed to 6-25, losing to the likes of Lipscomb and barely avoided losing to Division II school Chaminade in the seventh-place game at the Maui Invitational. It was ugly.

"We had no leadership that year," Crean said. "You look around pro and college sports, you take the leader out of a business and the business will be affected. Now you take the leadership out of a program, and the players don't have anyone to look up to, nobody who's been through that. We had to grow into that. We could have signed junior college kids, but it wouldn't have made any difference because they hadn't been through Indiana and neither had we."

While Hulls was busy winning the state's 2009 Mr. Basketball Award, he watched disbelievingly as his hometown school tumbled.

When Crean offered him a chance to be part of the solution, Hulls couldn't pass it up.

Crean gave the same sales pitch same everywhere he went: Come to Indiana and you'll get playing time right away, maybe start, become part of something bigger than themselves, earn a degree from a highly-respected institution and forever be known in Hoosiers lore as part of the group that rebuilt Indiana basketball.

"I remember the dark days, and now I see the guys being picked high. The program is back," said shooting guard Maurice Creek, who came to Indiana to help restore the basketball program before three season-ending injuries derailed his career. "We have more pieces than when I first got here."

The struggles continued through Crean's next two seasons as Indiana went 10-21 and 12-20. Doubters began to wonder how long all this would take.

The Hoosiers answered that challenge with a magical 2011-12. Indiana won 15 more games, finishing 27-9 and making their first NCAA tourney under Crean. But it wasn't just the Hoosiers record that got national attention.

On Dec. 10, Christian Watford hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat No. 1 Kentucky 73-72. Three weeks later, the Hoosiers upset then No. 2 Ohio State 74-70. In February, as No. 5 Michigan State closed in on a Big Ten title, the Hoosiers did it again, soundly beating the Spartans 70-55.

It marked the first time in school history that Indiana had beaten three top-five teams in the same season, and the first time in Crean's tenure that the Hoosiers became a ranked team. The only real glitch came in the March rematch with Kentucky, won by the eventual national champs 102-90 ? a loss the Hoosiers are now using as motivation.

"It probably always lingers because you never want to lose a game," Hulls said. "You hate the feeling of a loss, and we don't want to get back to that point and lose again."

Zeller, who averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds last season, has grown about one-half inch to an even 7-feet, has added 10 to 15 pounds of muscle and feels stronger and better than he did a year ago. He is also ready to start shooting 3-pointers.

"I worked on it a lot this summer," he said after Hoosier Hysteria. "I shot 3s in high school, but I know I'll have to shoot some from outside this year."

Watford (12.6 points), Hulls (11.7 points) and Oladipo (10.8) also are back.

What else does Indiana have? Depth and one of the nation's top freshmen classes.

Backup Will Sheehey (8.6) and sophomores Remy Abell and Austin Etherington could all have expanded roles this year. New point guard Yogi Ferrell and two 6-foot-8 forwards, Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Jeremy Hollowell, all freshmen, could both see significant playing time, too, especially with forward Derek Elston expected to miss six to eight weeks with a torn meniscus.

But Crean has another advantage other national contenders don't. His team has enough players still around from those losing seasons to remind players to ignore the chatter and just work toward getting their sweetest finish of all ? a sixth national championship banner.

"I'm not even going to try to downplay that it's not a big deal. It's not a 'hey, we told you so.' It's none of that. We lived it. And I think it's a great testament to everybody that's been a part of that program with sticking with it and moving onward and upward," Crean said. "It's an incredible program. It's an incredible school. We need people that are going to come in and leave it in a better place than they found it. That's exactly what our players are trying to do."

The Hot Wheels Camaro: no longer just a toy

By Paul A. Eisenstein, TheDetroitBureau.com

Chevrolet and Mattel have had a long and prosperous relationship. The toy company has been producing matchbox-sized replicas of the Camaro since 1968, a year after the real Chevy pony car first landed in showrooms.

At the upcoming SEMA auto show in Las Vegas, the automaker plans to return the favor, introducing the first production version of the?Chevrolet Camaro to bear a Hot Wheels badge.

TheDetroitBureau: Iconic London 'black' cab could soon vanish

Chevy has used the Hot?Wheels theme for several years at its SEMA stand. Last year, it positioned a bright yellow version of the Camaro at the base of a life-size track.? But now the automaker plans to actually add a Hot Wheels edition to its lineup.? It will come as a $6,995 upgrade on both the 2013 Chevrolet Camaro and Camaro convertible. Sales are scheduled to begin early next year.

For the money, the special edition will get a bright metallic paint scheme, special graphics, red-lined 21-inch wheels and Hot Wheels flame badges on the fenders and trunk lid.

TheDetroitBureau: Nation?s fastest highway opens

The Hot Wheels Camaro will feature matte-black touches around the hood and taillight surrounds. And the upgrade will also borrow some trim pieces from the high-performance Camaro ZL1 package, including the rear spoiler, front grille and front splitter.

The black leather-trimmed interior will boast Hot Wheels logos embroidered on the front seats, which are finished in red and black stitching.? The Hot Wheels flame will adorn the door interiors with special Hot Wheels Edition sill plates completing the package.

Chevrolet?s MyLink infotainment package will come standard.

TheDetroitBureau: Chevy moving up-market with Sonic Dusk

The Hot Wheels Camaro can be ordered with either the Chevy 2LT package with its 3.6-liter V-6, rated at its stock 323 horsepower, or the 400-hp 2SS package featuring the 6.2-liter L99 V-8.? The 2SS will be delivered with a dual-mode exhaust system, as will the 2LT equipped with a manual gearbox.

Chevy can only hope to match the success of the 1:64 edition Camaros that Mattel has sold by the millions over the last 44 years. The pony car was one of 16 original Hot Wheels models ? a favor being returned as the Chevrolet Hot Wheels Camaro becomes the first production car to carry the toy series? name.

The DetroitBureau: Honda designs car exclusively for women

The project was launched in 2010 and initially was focused on the concept model unveiled at the SEMA show last year. The final production design for the 2013 street car was taken from one of five sketches worked up by Hot Wheels chief designer Felix Holst.

?It?s been nearly 20 years since I started designing?cars for Hot Wheels and I have yet to drive one home,? said Holst, the vice president of creative for the Mattel Wheels Division. ?Personally, I can?t wait to open the doors and see the Hot Wheels Camaro sitting in the garage.?

Lessons from Irene help retailers cope with Sandy

By Dhanya Skariachan

Posted 2012/10/29 at 5:50 pm EDT

NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2012 (Reuters) ? Retailers preparing for the worst of Hurricane Sandy as it hit the East Coast on Monday looked back to only a year ago to Hurricane Irene for a blueprint.

A woman and child walk through an aisle, emptied in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, in a Wal-Mart store in Riverhead, New York, October 28, 2012. REUTERS/Lucas Jackson

From when to get product into the region before a storm hits, to keeping track of workers when the hurricane comes, Irene provided important lessons, retailers said.

"Irene was something unprecedented last year. We learned a number of things from that," Terry Johnson, Lowe's senior vice president of store operations, told Reuters.

Irene which ranked as the fifth-costliest hurricane in U.S. history, slammed much of the U.S. East Coast last year. The lessons from that destructive hurricane have helped many chains prepare better this year.

For instance, Lowe's started deploying products like generators, tarps, batteries and electric cables to distribution centers early last week to avoid facing delays due to potential road closures. The company, the second-largest U.S. home improvement chain, started stocking up on products even before it could get a good read of the exact path of Hurricane Sandy.

"We are thinking a little bit bigger (this time)," Johnson told Reuters by phone.

Products that retailers moved closer to where the hurricane will hit also include bottled water, flashlights and dry food.

For Target Corp , the lesson from Irene was to have the products in the region five to six days in advance.

"What we've learned in responding to these in the past is finding the sweet spot in reloading the area with product," Target spokeswoman Amy Reilly said of having supplies in a region for shoppers to stock up on during a hurricane.

Hurricane Irene hit the region on the final weekend of August 2011, causing flooding and power outages during the back-to-school shopping season, one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year.

If there is good news for retailers, Hurricane Sandy is hitting in what is typically a slow time, between back-to-school and the all-important holiday shopping season.

"The timing is far enough away from any major holiday, so it's unlikely to have a meaningful impact on the overall holiday sales unless there is a catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina proportions," said Joel Bines, managing director of AlixPartners' retail practice, referring to the storm that devastated New Orleans in 2005.

Still, Target, Sears , Starbucks , Walmart , Home Depot and other closed hundreds of stores Monday as the hurricane hit.

"Every day lost for a lot of these retailers, if they're nice-to-have items, they're just sales you're just not going to get back," said Evan Gold, a senior vice president at Planalytics, which advises retailers on business weather intelligence.

Gold estimated that most major U.S. chains have at least 10 percent of their stores in Sandy's path.

Spending on generators and storm clean up is also likely to cut into budgets people have for holiday items, he said.

LOGISTICS MATTER

Irene, and other hurricanes, also taught retailers how logistics related to their employees and stores.

Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite said that from Hurricane Irene and, more recently, Hurricane Isaac, the retailer is better able to track its workers and determine if they have been affected by the storm and need support.

The retailer also has a better communication system in place for notification if a store is going to close.

Other retailers learned which stores could serve many customers.

"We looked very closely at store sales trends from Irene and which stores would be most essential for us to keep open to serve communities with multiple locations," said Eric Harkreader, a spokesman for drugstore chain operator Rite Aid .

"Also like Irene, we have generators positioned strategically around the storm's path in the hopes we'll be able to move in quickly and get the most essential stores back up and running quickly should they lose power," he said.

Of course, if the Internet - or the mobile device - keeps working, a big storm could benefit some retailers.

"Online ordering may be up. It is a good day to order holiday gifts if the kids aren't driving you crazy," said Al Sambar, retail strategist at consulting firm, Kurt Salmon.

New Yorkers try for normalcy as Sandy approaches

NEW YORK (AP) ? Defiant New Yorkers jogged, pushed strollers and took snapshots of churning New York Harbor Monday, trying to salvage normal routines in a city with no trains, schools and an approaching mammoth storm.

"The worst is still coming," warned Gov. Andrew Cuomo as officials shut tunnels, Broadway, mass transit and the stock exchange, saying Hurricane Sandy's storm surge could inundate downtown with up to 11 feet of water. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers living on the waterfront or low-lying areas were ordered to leave.

On New York's Long Island, floodwaters had begun to deluge some low-lying towns and more than 100,000 customers had lost power. And high winds picked up during the day in the city, apparently tipping over a construction crane at a 65-story condominium under construction in midtown Manhattan. Waters swelled over esplanades at the southern tip of Manhattan and parts of a highway that snakes along Manhattan's East Side was flooded. About 16,000 New Yorkers lost power, mostly in the boroughs of Queens and Staten Island.

Despite the dire forecasts, many chose to embrace what was coming.

Doorman Ozzie Pomales showed up at work at his lower Manhattan high-rise with binoculars around his neck. "I really wanted to see some big waves," he said.

Mark Vial pushed a stroller holding his 2-year-old daughter Maziyar toward his apartment building in Battery Park City, an area that was ordered evacuated. Gov Go

"We're high up enough, so I'm not worried about flooding," said Via, 35. "There's plenty of food. We'll be ok."

Nearby, Keith Reilly climbed up on a rail next to the rising waters of New York Harbor so his friend Eli Rowe could snap a photo of him in an Irish soccer jersey with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

"This is not so bad right now," said the 25-year-old Reilly. "We'll see later."

The worst of the storm, a combination of Sandy, a wintry system from the West and cold air streaming from the Arctic, was expected to hit the city under a full moon at about 8 p.m. Surging waters of between 6 and 11 feet could flood subway tunnels, knocking out the underground network of power, phone and high-speed Internet lines that are the lifeblood of America's financial capital.

It marked the second time in 14 months that New York City has faced a scenario forecasters have long feared: a big hurricane hitting the city or a bit south, with counterclockwise winds driving water into miles of densely populated shoreline.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged more of the 375,000 people in the city's evacuation zone to get out earlier Monday, saying the weather would soon get too bad to leave. He closed schools for a second day on Tuesday. The U.N. and the 9/11 memorial were also closed.

"Leave immediately. ... The window for you getting out safely is closing," he said.

Joshua Segal, who lives in a 10-story Battery Park City building, stayed, chatting with neighbors outside his building Monday afternoon. He said at least half of his neighbors decided not to leave, even though the superintendent turned off the elevator.

He said he can understand why people with health concerns might want to evacuate but "if you're in good health and you're just going to stay and read a book by candlelight ? I'm OK."

Without most stores and museums open, tourists were left to snap photos of the World Trade Center site, Wall Street and Times Square in largely deserted streets.

Belgian tourist Gerd Van don Mooter-Dedecker, 56, wandered in to Trinity Church after learning that a planned shopping spree with her husband Monday wouldn't happen. "We brought empty suitcases so we could fill them up," she said.

She was scheduled to fly home Tuesday but now hopes the foul weather will add to their vacation. The weather didn't worry her. "We're use

And New Yorkers Andrew Rotz and Alex Grvymala, two young investment bankers on the Battery, wearing shorts and t-shirts, were jogging all over Lower Manhattan. Rotz said they wanted to blow off some energy before the storm hit.

"It's seems like this one's for real," Grvymala said of the coming storm.

Long Island felt the brunt of the storm first, covering famed Jones Beach in water by early Monday and flooding towns like Riverhead and Montauk on the Hamptons. ??

Sean Seal piled dirt and sandbags onto the alleyway behind his collectibles store in the fishing village of Greenport, where the water was steadily creeping up the street toward his front door. He only opened the shop about two months ago.

"We put everything up. Up on tables, up on shelves, as far as we could," he said. "It's gonna be devastating. We'll lose a lot of stuff. It's not gonna be good."

People were shopping for last-minute supplies in Bayville, located directly on Long Island Sound near Oyster Bay, as the sound splashed over a seawall on the only road that leads in and out of the town. Judy Sniffen returned from taking her husband for dialysis on Monday morning.

"I'm taking it very seriously; this storm is very serious to me," she said. "That Sound looks very angry."

Brian Cox?s Wonders of the Universe tops iOS Apps of the Week

It?s nearly November, but hopefully this week?s top iOS apps won?t leave you out in the cold. Leading off is Brian Cox?s Wonders of the Universe, a fascinating app for space and science geeks that offers a multimedia tour from earth to the edge of the known universe. Others include a translation app, the iPhone debut of a classic magazine, an update to a music-streaming app and a new automatic task-scheduling app.

It?s easy to forget there?s a whole universe out there, but with Brian Cox?s Wonders of the Universe app you?ll never forget how vast and crazy space can be. Wonders of the Universe offers a 3D tour of the cosmos, complete with info on galaxies near and far, going all the way to what the app calls ?the edge of the known universe.? The app has more than 200 interactive articles and nearly three hours of videos from the BBC TV series ?Wonders of the Solar System? and ?Wonders of the Universe.? Finally, the app has hundreds of photographs of various objects in space.

Translator apps are great, but so often they require an Internet connection ? something that can be terribly costly if you?re actually in a foreign country and looking to get some translating done. Languages, an app by Sonico GmbH, eliminates that issue because it works offline. The app offers 12 language dictionaries, including Spanish to English, German to English, French to English, Dutch to English, German to French, French to Spanish and many more. Languages even lists common phrases in case you can?t take the time to fully dive into the app.

National Geographic Magazine makes its iPhone debut this week after a sterling debut on the iPad. The app offers digital versions of the print magazine with additional interactive content in the form of numerous videos each issue.? An annual subscription is only $19.99 and back issues from February 2011 onward are also available in-app.

8Tracks Radio?s redesign better positions it in the competitive streaming music app market. The new design features? icons on a scrolling top menu bar to bring users from one feature to the next. The app now features full-screen artwork and playlist discovery through music mood and genre. You can also swipe to browse quickly through stations and mixes in this new version of the app.

24me requires a bit of trust . You ?plug in their social networks and financial institutes into the app so it can collect data. However, the payoff is that the app will then notify you of bills that are due, remind you of friends birthdays and even help you outsource some of your errands. You can set a price for how much they?re willing to pay for a person to do a specific task and the app will attempt to locate a person using the TaskRabbit service. Tasks can also be added to 24me manually just like a regular calendar or to-do list app.

Sequester and Fiscal Cliff Impact on Small Business

Those of us here in the U.S. have been hearing a lot about ?sequester? (variation ?sequestration?) ? and its cousin, ?fiscal cliff.? ?I?d be willing to bet that quite a few of my fellow small business owners have no idea what those terms mean. ?Politicians bandy them about ?as if they think we all know what they are talking about. ?In fact, we are focused on our families, our businesses, our communities, our faith ? not what happens in Washington.

So I set out to find out what the words sequester and fiscal cliff really mean.

Budget US Government

What is sequester?

Sequester?refers to mandatory government spending cuts that are looming. ?On January 1, 2013, $109 billion in spending cuts will automatically kick in across the board, according to the Christian Science Monitor. ?But that?s just the first step.

Over time $600 billion in cuts are required in defense programs, and another $600 billion in domestic programs.

What is the fiscal cliff?

The term ?fiscal cliff? is a shorthand term for?the impact of those cuts. ?A big deadline is looming on January 1, 2013 when the cuts start going into effect.

In addition, certain tax increases will also go into effect.

The resulting impact is so dramatic that it could throw the country back into a recession. ?In other words, we?re headed toward a financial precipice.

What will be the impact??

The proposed changes are so sudden and deep that the Congressional Budget Office ?estimates they would shave?gross domestic product (GDP) by?4%?in 2013, triggering another recession (i.e., negative growth). That could lead to higher unemployment, with a loss of 2 million jobs.

Even if you believe that government spending should be cut, as I do, the problem is that mandated cuts will be made across the board. ?They may not be the right cuts.

The analogy I use is that one day in your business you decide to finally address your red ink. ?You decide you need to ?cut expenses. ?But you do it by laying off your best sales people and not paying your ?insurance premiums. Then the sales orders slow to a trickle. ?Then you have a fire and lose all your inventory and equipment, with no insurance to replace it. ? Hmmm, maybe you should have found have other expenses to cut.

How does sequester and the fiscal cliff affect small businesses?

Sooner or later with high spending, there has to be a reckoning.

However, when you cut spending across the board, you can cut the legs out from important programs that should not be cut. ?Defense cuts, for example, could hamper the ability of our country to defend itself and stay as secure as Americans expect.

And when you raise taxes, are you raising the right taxes? ?Or do the higher taxes strangle growth among the very groups you expect to create economic growth, such as jobs?

For small businesses specifically, the tax increases would impact those who make over $250,000 a year. ?As Professor Scott Shane points out, with help from George Haynes of Montana State University, raising taxes on those making more than $250,000 would affect the business owners that employ a whopping 93 percent of employees in small businesses. ?And since many business owners sacrifice for years to reinvest in the business ? in anticipation of it paying off later on ? the taxes will hit them just as those years of sacrifice start to pay off in higher earnings for the business owner.

A Tax Foundation report also suggests that tax increases on those with incomes over $250,000 would slow growth and have an impact on business owners, because so many businesses report pass-through income.

The American Enterprise Institute suggests the sequester defense cuts would?hurt small businesses?in the defense industry, in particular:

?As Aerospace Industries Association President Marion Blakey has put it, 70 cents of every defense dollar goes to small firms. ? In 2011, 20 percent of Department of Defense contracts and 35 percent of subcontracts were awarded to small businesses specifically. ?Small business? value to the defense industry goes beyond the raw percentages. Smaller, specialized firms are often the only producers of niche equipment, software or technology, and as such, play an indispensable role in the military?s supply chain.?

As for the healthcare law (?Obamacare?) that is phasing in, it?s hard to tell what impact that is going to have on small businesses. ?The law is so complex and the discussion so politicized? it?s hard to know what to believe. ?What we do know is that when the U.S. Supreme Court declared it constitutional, they also declared it a tax.

?What can you do about the fiscal cliff?

Demand that our lawmakers address spending and our national debt, and pass a budget. ?Shamefully, this country has not passed a real budget in years. If we ran our businesses that way, we?d end up in bankruptcy.

Deciding what to spend on ? and not ? and deciding ?how to pay for that spending, require hard choices. ?That?s true in ?your family budget or your business budget or the government?s budget. No one says it is easy. ?But the reason we pay elected officials is to sort through and make those judgments ? not just default to across-the-board cuts that could hurt more than they help.

Sweet potato and red capsicum frittata | Fig & Cherry

Posted on October 29, 2012 by ChristieBreakfast, Dinner Time, Gluten Free, Vegetarian

Here we are at Meatless Monday again. Gosh they come around fast!

This week I?m going to do a bit of annoying boasting? all the herbs in this dish came from my garden. Cue smug smile.

And, we?re done. I?ll be back boasting again when I can claim some vegetables too.

Nothing much to say about today?s recipe except that frittatas are just fantastic for breakfast, lunch or dinner when you need to clean out the fridge of odds and ends. Bits of cheese, odd vegetables, limp herbs ? they can all go in ? and what comes out is a quick and filling meal.?

If you don?t fancy sweet potato and capsicum, then you might like to check out my roasted broccoli frittata instead.

Do you make frittata?s to clean out the fridge? What?s the weirdest ingredient or combination you?ve put in one?

Linking up with the gorgeous?Veggie Mama?s Meatless Mondays. Click on through for lots more delicious vegetarian recipes!

Sweet potato and capsicum frittata

serves 4

  • 500g sweet potato (1 medium), peeled and sliced into 1cm rounds
  • 6 large eggs
  • 185ml (3/4 cup) Vitasoy Soy Milky Lite
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs, finely chopped (I used parsley, sage and dill)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 red capsicum, seeds removed and thinly sliced into strips

1. Place the sliced sweet potato into a medium saucepan and fill with cold tap water. Heat on the stove top over high heat until boiling, then boil for 5 minutes until tender. Drain well and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, soymilk and herbs. Season with lots of freshly ground black pepper and a little salt. Set aside. Heat the overhead grill (broiler) on your oven to the highest setting.

3. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan that is also ovenproof (no plastic handles!) on the stove top. Add the sliced capsicum and saut? over high heat for 5 minutes until softened and slightly browned. Add the sweet potato and distribute evenly over the surface of the pan.

4. Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables and shake the pan gently to make sure it settles evenly. Cook for 3-4 minutes, without stirring, until there is a layer of cooked egg on the bottom and a layer of runny egg on top.

5. Place the frying pan under the grill with the oven door ajar, and cook for 5-8 minutes until puffed up and golden. Use an oven mitt to remove as the handle will now be very hot. Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving warm. It?s also great at room temperature.

Fig & Cherry?was commissioned by?Vitasoy Australia?to develop this sponsored recipe featuring their range of non-dairy milks.?For more great soy recipes (including plenty more by Christie!) visit?www.soy.com.au.

Scalia Gives Lively Speech at UW | Sheridan Media - Serving ...

Passing through Laramie after an unsuccessful antelope hunt, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia stopped at the University of Wyoming to make an impassioned and humorous case for sticking to the original meaning of the U.S. Constitution.

Scalia said Thursday he deplores the popular notion that the Constitution changes to meet society's needs. Rather, he said he sticks to its original meaning just as when people read Shakespeare they use a glossary to check the original meaning of his words.

Scalia denied his approach always leads to the most conservative decisions. For example, he said he sided with the court majority in ruling that it's constitutional to allow burning of the U.S. flag. But he said if he were king, he would throw "that bearded, sandal-wearing weirdo in jail."

Yankah on Vice Crimes

Yankah ekowEkow N. Yankah?(Yeshiva University - Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law) has posted?Legal Vices and Civic Virtue: Vice Crimes, Republicanism and the Corruption of Lawfulness?(Criminal Law and Philosophy, Forthcoming) on SSRN. Here is the abstract:

Vice crimes, crimes prohibited in part because they are viewed as morally corrupting, engage legal theorists because they reveal importantly contrasting views between liberals and virtue-centered theorists on the very limits of legitimate state action. Yet advocates and opponents alike focus on the role law can play in suppressing personal vice; the role of law is seen as suppressing licentiousness, sloth, greed etc. The most powerful advocates of the position that the law must nurture good character often draw on Aristotelian theories of virtue to ground the connection between law and virtue. While Aristotle believed that law and character were linked, it is ironic to note that he did not argue for the position evidenced in our vice laws that law was likely to succeed in instilling virtue.

Indeed, Aristotle thought the project of using law to instill private virtue was nearly certain to fail. Aristotle?s deep concern was not for the way law protected private virtue within each person but the way law had to protect civic virtue between citizens. This article argues that even from its foundations, the project of vice crimes as moral instruction is misconceived. The use of law for overly instrumental or narrow reasons opens law and legal institutions to abuse and factionalism. Lawyers, judges and others specially con- nected to law must first and foremost aim at addressing ??legal vices,?? vices internal to the institutions of law. Particularly, increasing factionalism and instrumentalism which dis- connects law from the pursuit of the common good threatens our civic bonds. Most importantly, where civic bonds are disrupted, citizens have no reason to remain law abiding. The striking lesson, captured both in ancient philosophy and modern history, is that when legal vices grow unchecked and factions use the law to pursue narrow interests, ultimately law abidingness is corrupted and interest groups harm themselves as much as others.
