Rebecca Adlington determined to fight to defend ... - BBC World News

Defending Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington has vowed to fight to retain her 800m freestyle crown after claiming bronze in the 400m freestyle on Sunday night. Rebecca Adlington followed up her 400m freestyle gold in Beijing with a bronze in London (Picture: Reuters) Adlington, who was also defending champion in the 400m event, swam a superb race to finish third behind France?s Camille Muffat and American Allison Schmitt from lane eight in the Aquatic Centre. But the British swimmer knows she will have her work cut out to get on the podium again on Friday. ?I?m going to have to fight like hell to get a medal. I know the 800m is going to be a fight, exactly the same as the 400m. ?I know it?s going to be extremely tough but I am going to try my absolute hardest, just as I did on Sunday, and hopefully the crowd can pick me up as they did then and I can pick up that performance.? Elsewhere in the pool, Briton Gemma Spofforth will be out to defend her world record in the women?s 100m backstroke, Liam Tancock is in action in the men?s 100m backstroke final, while Robbie Renwick will also be going for gold in the men?s 200m freestyle.
