Man arrested in connection with LA arson spree (AP)
LOS ANGELES ? Authorities arrested a man Monday in connection with dozens of suspected arson fires that destroyed parked cars, scorched buildings and rattled much of the nation's second-largest city over the New Year's weekend.
The suspect resembled a "person of interest" captured on surveillance video near a carport. The man, believed to be 20 to 30 years old, had a receding hairline and a shoulder-length ponytail and was seen emerging from an underground parking garage on Hollywood Boulevard where a car fire was reported.
He was stopped early Monday in a van that matched a description given by witnesses.
Police declined to identify the suspect, but said he was to be booked later on arson charges arising from more than 50 blazes that have flared since Friday in Hollywood, neighboring West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley.
Firefighters have not responded to any other suspicious fires since the man was detained, Capt. Jamie Moore said.
The blazes caused an estimated $2 million in damage and forced many apartment dwellers from their homes. But there were no serious civilian injuries. One firefighter was hurt, and another person suffered smoke inhalation, Moore said.
One of Saturday's fires occurred at the Hollywood and Highland entertainment complex, a popular tourist destination bordered by the Walk of Fame in a neighborhood that includes Grauman's Chinese Theatre.
Damaged buildings included a former home of Doors singer Jim Morrison in Laurel Canyon.
Most of the fires began in cars. Authorities have not said how they were started. Investigators declined to provide any other immediate details, saying they did not want to jeopardize the case. A news conference was scheduled for Monday evening.
Hundreds of investigators, police officers and firefighters raced to deal with the blazes. Police conducted extra patrols all weekend, and the noise of helicopters and sirens persisted virtually nonstop in Hollywood.
Investigators were still busy Monday mapping out the sequence of the blazes, examining more than 100 clues and interviewing witnesses.
The fires left behind a trail of smoldering debris. Police urged residents to check their cars for any signs of tampering and to take simple precautions such as locking vehicles, keeping garage and carport lights on at night and reporting suspicious activity.
Despite the arrest, authorities continued to urge vigilance.
"We're not resting, and we're not stopping" the extra patrols, police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. "If you have lights in your carport area, keep them on tonight."
Some other deliberately set fires were reported Thursday in Hollywood, and two people were arrested. But police said Monday that those suspects were not connected with the 53 other blazes.

Hudson credits dead brother for comeback
Jennifer Hudson surprised many when, just months after a family tragedy that saw her mother, brother and nephew murdered, she returned to the stage to sing the Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XLIII.
But as the "Dreamgirls" star and former "American Idol" favorite sees it, she didn't have a choice -- her murdered brother wouldn't have it any other way.
Hudson appears on the Jan. 8 edition of NBC's "Dateline" to discuss the tragedy, among other topics, and tells the show's Lester Holt that she heard her brother Jason's voice, which urged her to undertake the comeback performance.

"I felt as though I had to," Hudson tells Holt. "[J]ust the same as I hear my mother's voice in my head, I can hear my brother's voice in my head. And he-- they, like, everybody, it's like, is she ever gonna sing again? Is she gonna-- you know? And what was I gonna say to that-- I could hear him, like, 'Jennifer--' he would always say, 'Knock it off, Jenny,' if I was cryin' about somethin' or if I was upset, discouraged, mad, 'Jenny, knock it off.' That's what I hear in my head. And it's like, 'Okay, well, what they want me to do? I can either just sit here and mope around, or do what I know that would make them proud.' And that's what I did."
During the interview, Hudson also reveals how she would have been on the scene at the time of the murders were it not for her fiance, professional wrestler David Otunga.
"I remember it like yesterday," Hudson recalls. "I was literally pickin' up my bags to walk out the door to go to my mother's house. And he called me, like, 'Can you come out here instead of going, you know?' And I was like, 'Okay, sure.' And that one decision, that one thing, I wouldn't be sittin' here."
Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, along with her brother Jason, were found shot to death in Donerson's Chicago home on October 24, 2008; Donerson was 57, and Jason 29. After a search, Hudson's 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, was found in a parked car, after dying of what the medical examiner's office determined to be multiple gunshot wounds. William Balfour, the estranged husband of Hudson's sister Julia, pleaded not guilty to the murders and awaits trial in February.

I was just wondering if we are missing something really obvious and someone could help. I have a family member in Mexico at the moment and they can not send or receive an mms, at home they can though. They are on a contract and have never had this problem before although it is the first time this particular phone has been used abroad. And they are with t mobile Does anyone know anything obvious which we are missing and need to do? Thanks |

Man pleads guilty in bomb attempt near Columbine (Reuters)
DENVER (Reuters) ? A convicted bank robber accused of trying to set off a bomb at a shopping mall near Columbine High School on the 12th anniversary of the shooting rampage there pleaded guilty on Friday to a federal charge.
Earl Moore, a 65-year-old convicted bank robber who was released from prison just a week before the April 20 incident, faces a minimum 30-year prison term when he is sentenced in March.
Moore pleaded guilty during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Denver to a single count of using a destructive device during a crime of violence.
"I didn't have any intention of hurting anybody, your honor," Moore told Senior U.S. District Judge John Kane. "I guess I was just upset. It was a domestic thing. It doesn't make any sense."
Moore's defense attorney and prosecutors agreed that his action had nothing to do with the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine massacre.
The device, which was connected to two small propane canisters, was placed at Southwest Plaza but did not explode although it did cause minor fire damage in a service corridor.
There were no injuries, but the incident forced authorities to evacuate the mall and stirred alarm on the anniversary of the Columbine shooting rampage.
Two Columbine students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, fatally shot 12 classmates and a teacher before killing themselves on April 20, 1999, also using makeshift bombs made from propane tanks.
Moore was "sleeping in the woods" without a job or place to live when he slipped into a back door of Southwest Plaza mall with the explosive materials, his attorney, Assistant Federal Public Defender Robert Pepin, told reporters.
Pepin said his client wanted him to tell reporters he regrets his actions and "deeply regrets any impact" they had on people traumatized by the massacre 12 years earlier. He said Moore did not realize he placed the bomb on the anniversary.
Kane, who said that Moore faced "essentially a life sentence" because of his age, told attorneys for both sides he would consider ordering a mental evaluation of the defendant.
Prosecutors agreed to drop a charge of arson in exchange for Moore's guilty plea. Moore had been released from federal prison on April 13 after serving time for the 2005 robbery of a West Virginia bank.

A preliminary closing list of 79 stores does not include the Sears at Mount Berry Square or the Kmart on Hicks Drive, which also sells Sears appliances and a few other Sears items. It was not known Thursday when more closures will be announced.
In Georgia, Sears Holdings Corp. says it will close its store at the Macon mall, along with several Kmarts in Buford, Columbus, Douglasville, Jonesboro and Southwest Atlanta.
Florida will be hit the hardest by the closing of Sears and Kmart stores, losing 11.
Ohio, Michigan and Georgia are not far behind with six store closures planned in their states. Tennessee, North Carolina and Minnesota are set to lose four stores each.
A spokeswoman for Sears Holding Corp. said each store employs between 40 and 80 people.
None of the closures announced so far are in Sears? home state of Illinois.
The projected closings represent only about 3 percent of Sears Holdings? U.S. stores. Sears and Kmart merged in 2005. The company now has about 3,560 stores in the U.S. That?s up from 3,500 immediately after the merger, because of the addition of more small stores.
