'Only God Forgives' Director Nicolas Winding Refn Teases an Unlikely Sequel

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Nicolas Winding Refn is hoping to re-team with his "Vahalla Rising" star, Mads Mikkelsen ("Hannibal"), for another bloody adventure seen through the single eye of a violent mute.

The Playlist spoke to the director at Thursday's North American premiere of his latest film, "Only God Forgives," and Refn revealed that Mikklesen's character, One-Eye, would live again - in Tokyo.

"There's a similarity between 'Valhalla Rising,' 'Drive' and 'Only God Forgives.' But in a way I had this idea of Mads Mikklesen to go back to the origins of this character," Refn said. "But make the movie in Tokyo."

The 2009 film followed a silent warrior of supernatural strength who escapes his Viking captors, and joins a group of knights journeying to the Holy Land to fight in the Crusades, only to end up on an island populated by savages.

It's hard to imagine how Refn could craft a sequel to the film which took place in 1000 A.D., but he teased further adventures of One-Eye would be "about the future."

It's also hard to imagine when the idea will actually come into fruition, as he's currently in the process of resurrecting "Barbarella" for television, as well as developing an all-female horror film to direct.

"Only God Forgives," the director's second collaboration with Ryan Gosling and follow up to "Drive," hits theaters on July 19.

Colorado secede? Counties weigh exit plan to form state of 'North Colorado'

Colorado secede? It sounds implausible, but the idea of counties withdrawing from one state to form a new one isn?t impossible. But some big hurdles?? like the US Constitution?? make it very difficult.

It?s an uphill climb that looks Rocky Mountain high, but a collection of independent-thinking counties may mount an effort to secede from the rest of Colorado and form their own new state.

The idea is rooted in the political rift that many Coloradans ? especially rural ones ? feel with a Denver-based state legislature that has taken a liberal turn in recent years.

A new state, if it formed, might be called North Colorado.

Would that mean that the rest of the current state would need to become South Colorado? How would the US flag look with 51 stars? Would this give similar ideas to politically restive sections of other states?

It may be too early to ask such questions. The road to forming a new state is a difficult one.

The move would require not just a secession vote showing the counties? desire to depart. It would also require votes of approval by Colorado?s Legislature and by the US Congress, according to Article 4 of the US Constitution.

?No new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress,? the Constitution says.

According to the National Constitution Center, an organization based in Philadelphia, this process ?has been used successfully to create five states: Vermont (from New York, in 1791); Kentucky (from Virginia, in 1792); Tennessee (from North Carolina, in 1796); Maine (from Massachusetts, in 1820); and West Virginia (from Virginia, in 1863).?

So it can be done. And in Colorado, the idea is on the table.

In a Thursday?news article, the Coloradan website said the state?s Democrat-controlled Legislature has recently passed laws for stricter gun control, greater reliance on renewable energy in rural areas, and restraints on what was perceived as cruel treatment of livestock.

?Our vision and our morals are no longer represented by the state [Legislature] and the current [governor?s] administration, and we think it?s time that we do take seriously what our options are,? said Douglas Rademacher, a Weld County Commissioner. ?This is just one of our options, but we will be moving forward with it.?

In addition to Weld County, other counties weighing the new-state idea are Morgan, Logan, Sedgwick, Phillips, Washington, Yuma, and Kit Carson.

A state of North Colorado containing those counties would not be the smallest US state, in land area, but it would have the smallest population.

Similar ideas have?sprung up?in other US states. But again, since 1863, secession to form a new state hasn?t actually happened.

Paris Jackson reportedly attempts suicide

Celebs

Updated, Thursday, 10:30 a.m. ET: Paris Jackson, the only daughter of the late Michael Jackson, was hospitalized early Wednesday morning in Los Angeles, according to her grandmother?s attorney, Michael Koskoff. Sources close to the family are calling it an attempted suicide and told E! News that the teen has been dealing with "a lot of drama" lately."

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Scott Miller told NBC News Wednesday that his department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff?s Department responded to a call in the 25000 block of Prado De La Felicidad in Calabasas that came in as ?a possible overdose.? A patient was transported to a nearby hospital 20 minutes later.

Miller would not say who lives in the house, but the Jacksons own a home on that block.

In a segment on TODAY on Thursday, People magazine's Kate Coyne said that they had confirmed through sources close to the family that Paris cut her wrist.

In addition to the pressures of being the daughter of the late pop star, Paris, along with her family, have been embroiled in a lawsuit against AEG Live, claiming that the concert promoter failed to properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray for his role in the death of Michael Jackson. The trial is currently ongoing, and the fourth anniversary of Jackson's death is June 25.

"Being a sensitive 15-year-old is difficult no matter who you are," Kevin Boyle, an attorney for Katherine Jackson, said in a statement. "It is especially difficult when you lose the person closest to you. Paris is physically fine and is getting appropriate medical attention. Please respect her privacy and the family's privacy."

"These are really heavy-duty pressures for anyone, much less a young girl who's trying to figure themselves out," psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy said in Thursday's segment on TODAY.

Paris Jackson?s Twitter feed is known for its cryptic, over-sharing nature. Her messages on Tuesday night indicated that she may have been upset: ?I wonder why tears are salty?"

Later, she tweeted Beatles lyrics: ?Yesterday, all my troubles seemed far away now it looks as though they?re here to stay.?

The girl's mother, Debbie Rowe, said via her attorney Eric George: "We appreciate everyone's thoughts for Paris at this time and their respect for the family's privacy."

Paris's Aunt La Toya Jackson also issued a statement expressing thanks for the concern expressed over Paris, and noted that the family "handles these issues together."

How They Filmed Return Of The Jedi's Absurdly Great Speeder Chase

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Return Of The Jedi, the Ewok-filled amazingness that spelled the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. That film contained one of the most amazing high-speed chases ever seen on film. This is how they brought that death-defying chase to life.

One of the highlights of Return Of The Jedi is the speeder chase between the Rebels and the Empire. The Rebels need to distract the Scout Troopers in order to deactivate the shield generator, which would let the Rebel fleet penetrate the Death Star and defeat the Galactic Empire.

But you knew that already.

In the scene, Luke and Leia jump on their speeders and then race through the forest at seriously crazy high speeds. There are tons of narrow misses and there was obviously no way to safely or realistically do this at those high speeds.

That's because it wasn't close to real. The natural assumption is the chase was filmed on a dirtbike and then the footage was sped up, but there's a problem with that: Dirtbikes aren't exactly the smoothest riding vehicles in the world. The speeders float on the air, which means they need to appear smoother than a motorcycle could ever be.

The solution was clever and somewhat old fashioned. Cameras were operated at 3/4 of a frame per second as cameramen walked through Cheatham Grove, CA with steadicams. It sounds like it was back-breaking work:

Just 100 more yards. My left hand is slippery with sweat. Legs tired. Brain hurts most of all. I wonder if really intense concentration produces any lingering harmful effects...look at Bobby Fisher! (At a camera speed of only 3/4 frame per second, a thousand feet of precise walking gets you just 16 feet of VistaVision in the can, and every take you forget a few more important phone numbers, or a family birthday.) Is it worth it? At this rate I will be illiterate in a week and a vegetable in two.

Not only was cameraman Garrett Brown wearing the steadicam, he also had two gyroscopes attached to it for extra stabilization, although a slight amount of wobble was still wanted to make it semi-realistic. He also had to concentrate on the target like a sniper. One misstep would mean a ruined take and another slow trudge through the forest. At 3/4 speed, Brown says that 1,000 feet of walking got him 16 usable feet of footage.

Brown was personally skeptical of the idea when it was presented to him. But instead of saying no, he decided to go for it. What resulted was a cameraman walking slowly through the forest with a ton of equipment, where any slight error would cause him to start over again.

The 3/4 speed footage was sped up 30 times in order to make the film the standard 24 frames per seconds. That also made the speed appear to be a mind-boggling 120 MPH through the forest. Brown had to repeatedly walk through the forest in order to get the right shots. Filming at a slow speed like that also didn't let them calculate for exposure, but it seems that their guesswork was spot on and the corrections done in post production made for a great looking scene.

Was the agony of walking through the forest super slowly and making hundreds of cuts to get a three minute chase worth it? Damn right it was.

Ask Engadget: best WiFi router for super-fast Fiber?

Ask Engadget best WiFi router for superfast Fiber

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Travis from Provo, who is a jammy individual, wants to replace his router. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm currently living in Provo UT, and my wireless router just died. I want to replace it with something that's going to handle Google Fiber as that's on its way. What do you recommend?"

Given the number of places that are now getting super-speed fiber, we're very interested in the results of this one. We ask a similar question each year, and in 2012 you were all voicing your support for Cisco/Linksys hardware, ASUS' RT-N66U and D-Link's DIR-655. The only question is what'll come out on top in 2013, so get commenting, friends.
