Winning python from Florida hunt released

A new prize in the Florida python hunt has been announced and everybody wins.

The two men who caught the giant Burmese python collected a $1,000 prize. The giant snake was released back into the Everglades. And Florida wildlife experts expect the python -- outfitted with a pair of transmitters -- to show them where to find the thousands of snakes hiding in the wild and lead them to breeding females.

Two other pythons were also implanted with transmitters and sent back into the wild.

"It's breeding time and females attract males and we have three eager young lads sitting out there with radio transmitters on them who can lead us to the breeding female and we can catch her," Frank Mazzotti, professor of wildlife at the University of Florida who helped organize the challenge, told ABC News.

The Florida Python Challenge ended on this weekend with the round up of a mere 68 snakes. Officials held the snake hunt because the pythons have multiplied into the thousands in the Everglades and have become a threat to native species.

PHOTOS: Python Challenge in Florida Everglades

Mazzotti was not deterred by the number of snakes captured.

"We've never collected so many pythons in such a short period of time. It really is an unprecedented sample," he said. "It provides us with a sort of autopsy of the wildlife. There's going to be recommendations coming out of this that will help us be able to remove more snakes from the wild."

Initially the prize for the longest snake went to a man who brought in a 10-foot long python, but on Sunday another longest snake prize was given to Blake Russ and Devin Belliston of Miami who wrangled an 11-foot long python. The error in measurement, according to Mazzotti, has to do with the difficulty of measuring a live python.

Mazzotti worked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to design the challenge. The challenge's purpose was to not only remove Burmese pythons from the Everglades, but to also collect data from the snakes that were euthanized, and to track the three which were tagged with transmitters.

Mazzotti said the department weighed the risks of releasing the tagged pythons, but to ensure they can be recaptured, two transmitters were implanted in each snake. If one transmitter were to fail, another one would take its place.

"I absolutely never want to explain to someone that we left a snake out in the wild, so we make sure to put two transmitters in them so that they can be tracked," Mazzotti said.

The tagged pythons help Mazzotti and his team determine the full extent of the invasion both in terms of location and habits.

"Many of the snakes we catch we catch along roads, and we learn where else in the landscape they go. We also learn basic activity patterns. We then use that information to find when the best time to look for them and to remove them is."

Mazzotti plans to recapture the three snakes in April at the end of the breeding season. That's when Mazzotti hopes they'll be led to pregnant female snakes, which can also be captured and prevented from releasing baby pythons into the ecosystem.

Because the pythons are such a large predator, and aren't native to the Everglades, they have a negative effect on the top down food structure of the ecosystem.

Until the snakes are recaptured, Mazzotti and his team will focus on analyzing the data they collected from the 65 snakes which were euthanized. This data includes dietary and mercury samples.

Skin Cancer in Charlotte - What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a form of cancer that is oftentimes not painful, but can still be concerning and deadly if not addressed. In fact, it is the most common form of cancer in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 58,000 individuals were diagnosed with skin cancer in 2007, and over 8,000 individuals died from it. But how do you determine if you have skin cancer? What are some skin cancer symptoms that you should watch out for?

Skin cancer symptoms typically involve a change in your skin or a portion of your skin on your body. For example, you may have a sore on your skin that won't seem to heal. Or perhaps you have a new growth or spot that develops. Additionally, moles and skin tags that are on your body may change in color or shape. Skin cancer is oftentimes found on areas of your body that receive extensive sun exposure, such as the face, shoulders, and arms, but can be found anywhere on the body.

Any time there are changes to your skin such as these, it is essential that you go to the dermatologist to find out if skin cancer may be the cause. Diagnosing skin cancer in its earliest stages will help you and your dermatologist remove and/or treat the skin cancer itself. If you have a suspicious mole, Dr. Darst will do a biopsy. The biopsy is then sent to be processed and read by a Dermatopathologist , someone who specializes in the interpretation of skin diseases. Treatments may vary, depending on the size and area of the suspected cancer, but typically involve removing the cancerous area via excision or Mohs micrographic surgery. Other tests may be necessary to determine if the cancer has spread elsewhere in the body.

Concerned that you may have skin cancer symptoms? If you live in the Charlotte, South Charlotte, South Park, Waxhaw, Weddington or Monroe areas, call Dr. Darst of Darst Dermatology today for a full body examination. Acting fast when you notice skin cancer symptoms can help save your life!

Driven: 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid SEL

? 2013 Ford C-Max SEL Hybrid, five-door, five passenger compact hybrid utility vehicle

$27,199 base, $32,699 as tested plus freight

2.0-litre DOHC four - 141-horsepower, 129 lb.ft. of torque and electric motor ? 118 horsepower and 117 lb. ft. of torque. Total 188-horsepower (see note below), 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, continuously variable automatic transmission

Transport Canada says (litres/100 km): 4.1 city / 4.0 highway (realized 7.1)

Competition: Kia Rondo, Mazda5, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius V

Length: 4,409 mm

Width: 2,085 mm

Wheelbase: 2,650 mm

Weight: 1,660 kg

Ford is taking the hybrid game seriously. In addition to the Fusion hybrid it now offers the C-Max hybrid to be followed almost immediately by a plug-in C-Max hybrid and a plug-in Fusion hybrid.

Ford is positioning the C-Max with Toyota?s Prius firmly in its sights. The C-Max will be available only as a hybrid in two trim levels with several option packages.

The test car, a top level SEL with most of the optional goodies, is on the east coast for a few months as it rotates through the press core in the region. I was the first to have access and will get it back when it has made the rounds and will keep it for a couple of months to assess how a hybrid functions in a Canadian winter.

This first report will give a look at the overall package and initial impressions; we will get back to you in April with a summary report of how it fared over a few thousand kilometres.

The C-Max is built in Michigan on the same C1 global platform as the new Focus. It has been offered on the European market for more than a year with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines. Ford has brought it to North America intact, changing only where necessary to meet our unique crash standards.

The powertrain basics echo that offered on the previous generation Escape. Instead of the 2.5-litre four used there, it has a new generation 2.0-litre four running on the Atkinson cycle ? the engine is tuned specifically for maximum fuel mileage and minimal exhaust emissions.

This results in less power but that deficiency is filled by a two-motor, continuously variable planetary-gear transmission, one motor sends power to the wheels and the other runs the transmission. The Aisin-sourced CVT transmission used in previous Ford hybrids has been replaced by one developed and produced by Ford. The nickel-metal hydride battery pack used previously has been replaced by a lighter, more compact and powerful air-cooled 1.6 kWh lithium-ion unit, comprised of Sanyo batteries positioned under the cargo floor.

The C-Max hybrid will be joined in a few weeks by a plug-in version with a larger battery pack that offers more electric-only operation and can be plugged into conventional 110- or 220-volt outlets for recharging overnight.

The C-Max Energi, as it will be called, will carry a hefty price premium, but buyers in many provinces, not Nova Scotia, will be eligible for rebates of up to $5,808 which pretty much wipes out the increased cost, making the more efficient plug-in C-Max a very attractive proposition.

The C-Max?s tall profile results in exceptional headroom and very easy entry and exit. The upright seating position also requires less legroom. The front seats are comfy and supportive but the split/folding rears are bench-like. The tall roof also means plenty of cargo capacity. Overall there is as surprising amount of interior space and lots of light and visibility.

Ford does excellent interiors and this is a perfect example. The C-Max is more upscale in look and feel than the competition.

The standard equipment list is extensive: Power door locks, windows and mirrors, remote keyless entry, alloy wheels, dual-zone air conditioning, AM/FM/CD/MP3 player and steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, power glass sunroof, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, leather seats, SYNC (Voice-activated connectivity system) and MyFord with 11-cm LCD screen.

The SEL trim level adds a 10-way power driver?s seat, push-button start, heated seats, leather seats, reverse sensing system, satellite radio and perimeter alarm. The test vehicle has a $2,500 equipment package that brought a nine-speaker Sony audio and navigation system, power lift gate, rear view camera and a self-parking system

There are a number of clever touches like an in-floor cargo system and 110-volt outlet in the second row.

The C-Max bristles with all the latest Ford technology including the latest-generation SmartGauge?with EcoGuide which is designed to help the driver get the most from the hybrid system by informing you of instantaneous fuel economy and monitoring how your driving behavior affects efficiency.

The system includes a 'Brake Coach' which helps you optimize power regeneration and electric-only driving range through the braking system. When you come to a complete stop, the display tells how efficient your brake use was. My scores ranged from 70-97 per cent. There are a series of green leaves on the display to the right of the steering wheel that report on your overall performance.

The more leaves and vines displayed, the more efficient your driving has been. I don?t have a very green thumb! One gripe ? the regenerative braking system is extremely touchy, especially when cold, making it almost impossible to perform a smooth stop.

Driving the C-Max is a straightforward proposition, no special talents or steps are necessary. It behaves like a perfectly normal vehicle with the exception of the silence when it runs on electric power only and the aforementioned tricky brake pedal. Transport Canada rates it at 4.0 litres per 100 km on the highway and 4.1 in the city.

But TC ratings are notoriously out of touch with reality. I averaged 7.1 over several hundred winter kilometres almost equally split between city and highway. While impressive that is not outstanding. I got the readout below 6.0 on a couple of tender-footed occasions, but our hilly roads do not provide much opportunity for that. The impressive part is that the 7.1 number showed whether I was in the city or on the open highway.

Ford is taking the fight to Toyota, making a concerted effort at maximizing the user experience of hybrids. The C-Max makes a significant contribution.

(Note: In hybrid vehicles you cannot add the peak horsepower of the engine and electric motor as both reach their peak at different times.)

Sponsors sticking by 'Blade Runner,' agent says

South African runner Oscar Pistorious is entering his fifth day in jail after allegedly murdering his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. Police are investigating damage to her skull and friends of Pistorious say he frantically called them and admitted to shooting Steenkamp. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports

By Alastair Jamieson, Staff writer, NBC News

Sponsors are standing by "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic and Paralympic star accused of murdering his model girlfriend, his agent said Monday.

"All sponsors are still on board, and they have given us their commitment towards Oscar, based on the relationships that they have formed with him over the past years," said Peet van Zyl, who represents the double-amputee. "They are quite happy to allow the legal process to take its course before they make any other further and formal announcements on it."

His sponsors include Nike and Oakley, neither of which was immediately available for comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

This photo taken through a car window shows workers taking down a billboard of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius endorsing a product in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday.

The 26-year-old sprinter is due to appear in a South African court on Tuesday, where he will seek bail. He strongly denied charges that he murdered model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp, 29, at his home near Pretoria early on Valentine?s Day.

Despite the bail hearing, all his upcoming races have been canceled, van Zyl confirmed.

Steenkamp died from gunshot wounds, according to police. Her funeral is due to take place Tuesday.

Karyn Maughan, legal correspondent for South Africa news channel ENCA, told NBC's TODAY that the sprinter would need to convince the court that her death was an accident.

?If he can?t prove that her death was unintentional then it is unlikely he will get bail and he also faces a life sentenced in jail,? she said.

?He must try to convince the court he shot her in confusion, thinking she was an intruder. His difficulty is that multiple credible witness accounts suggest there were noises that sounded like an argument coming from the house before the shooting.?

According to newspaper reports Sunday, two friends claimed?the sprinter?called them in a panic after the shooting, telling them he had shot Steenkamp in a "terrible accident."

Pistorius? uncle, Arnold,?on Saturday said the Paralympian was ?numb with shock, as well as grief.?

Karyn Maughan, senior legal reporter for eNCA news in South Africa, tells TODAY's Savannah Guthrie that Olympian Oscar Pistorius will have difficulty proving he didn't purposely shoot his girlfriend, and she explains that the Olympic runner kept a cricket bat next to his bed in fear of being attacked.

>> we are in shock about this beautiful girl we have gotten to know well and deeply. they had plans together. oscar was happy in his private life than he seemed in a long time. oscar, as you can imagine, is also numb with shock and grief. we have no doubt here there is no substance for litigation and that the state's own case, including its own forensic evidence strongly refutes any possibility of a premedicated murder or murder as such.

>> reporter: unconfirmed details of what allegedly happened valentine's day morning swarm in the press here. newspapers are now publishing what they say are reeva's notes from a speech she was said to give at a school that day. i was in an abusive relationship, she wrote, from the time before she dated pistorius. i lost a lot of self-worth. it took some serious soul searching to remind myself of this value in this world.

>> just always be true to yourself. i'm going to miss you all so much. i love you very, very much.

>> reporter: remember, police have been pretty dismissive of suggestions that this might have been mistaken identity or self-defense. there were reports of what sounded like shouting coming from the home earlier that night. lester.
