RIM shares down again after new BlackBerry launch

(AP) ? Research In Motion's stock gyrations reflect investors' key concern: Is the BlackBerry maker's new phone the company's savior or isn't it?

THE SPARK: The company's critical new phone with the BlackBerry 10 operating system debuted Wednesday to mostly positive reviews. But the phone won't come out in the United States, a key market, until March.

Investors worried about RIM's future, had driven its stock to a nine-year low in September. But hopes that the new phone will juice demand for BlackBerrys and revive Research In Motion Ltd.'s fortunes have helped shares more than double since then.

Shares dropped 59 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $13.19 on the Nasdaq Thursday afternoon.

THE BIG PICTURE: Pioneered in 1999, the BlackBerry was a game-changing breakthrough in personal connectedness. It changed the culture by allowing on-the-go business people to access wireless email. But the iPhone's debut in 2007 showed that phones can do much more than email and phone calls, and exploded RIM's market. The company's shares sank for years as the BlackBerry lost ground to Apple Inc.'s iPhone and phones running Google Inc.'s Android system.

RIM promised a new system to catch up. But it has taken more than two years to unveil the new phones, which are redesigned for the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that cellphone buyers now demand.

The first device in the new crop of revamped BlackBerrys will be the Z10. It will have only a touch-screen keyboard, like the iPhone and most phones running Android, including Samsung Electronic Co.'s popular Galaxy line. Although the Z10 will go on sale Thursday in the U.K. and next Tuesday in Canada, it won't be available in the U.S. until March.

The Q10 will follow at least a month later, in some markets, and will have a physical keyboard, a feature that has kept BlackBerry users loyal over the years because it makes typing easier. RIM couldn't say when U.S. carriers would have it.

THE ANALYSIS: National Bank analyst Kris Thompson said BlackBerry 10 launched with few surprises other than more delays. The expected March launch in the U.S. for the Z10 is "very disappointing," as U.S. business, consumer and government phone buyers are the phone's most important market, Thompson said in a note. The April debut for the Q10 disappointed him as well.

Citi analyst Jim Suva called it odd that RIM is launching a big marketing campaign, including RIM's first Super Bowl commercial to be aired this Sunday, when U.S. customers can't buy the device for another month and a half.

Meanwhile, Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu suspects many investors are convinced the new BlackBerrys aren't different enough to diminish the popularity of the iPhone and Android devices.

Wu, who has a "Neutral" rating on the shares, said he was still concerned with RIM's "fundamentals."

CP+ 2013 wrap-up: brochure models, Japanese dancers and point-and-shoots aplenty

CP 2013 wrapup brochure models, Japanese dancers and pointandshoots aplenty

Despite an unfortunate lack of product introductions, largely due to the recent influx of new models at Photokina, there was plenty of excitement on the floor at Japan's annual CP+ trade show. The promise of new point-and-shoots brought us out to Yokohama, but non-stop manufacturer-sponsored entertainment at the exhibition hall, most often not in any way related to the devices on display, kept us coming back.

At Nikon's booth, Japanese dancers clad in a variety of "urban" dress, remained in constant motion in an effort to demonstrate the autofocus abilities of the company's latest 1 Series cameras. At dozens of other stands, models, often surrounded by groups of attendees, held camera brochures in an array of different poses. And, at Casio, female presenters spoke of the company's "speed revolution" in front of dozens of amateur photographers, each clicking away as if under a looming deadline. All in all, this relatively small exhibition is an experience not to be missed. So, even if you weren't able to visit this year, you can join us inside Pacifico Yokohama in the video after the break.

Church Fired Ruled Arson

An update to a story we brought you Monday, a?fire that destroyed a place of worship was ruled an arson.

The Reaching Souls Cathedral church off Rocky Creek Road and Bethesda Avenue was heavily damaged when a fire broke out Monday morning.

13WMAZ spoke with State Fire Marshal, Dwayne Garris who said, "It has been determined that it was a set fire."?

?Garris says they used a dog that was trained to detect accelerants in the burned building, which?alerted them to several different trouble spots.

"The arson canine is trained to detect about thirty different types of hydro carbon liquids that are used in setting a fire." explained Garris.??

He wouldn't say exactly how many areas they targeted or where, but said it was enough to determine arson. "I would say more than two and enough to deal with the issue."

"We have some areas that received fire damage themselves, and some where the fire department was able to make a good save on the building, so we possibly have some positive samples on areas that did not burn." explained Garris
?
Those samples were sent to a crime lab, and Garris predicts it could take several days to get the results back.?

Investigators are still interviewing possible witnesses.
He asks anyone with information to call the Arson Hotline at(800)282-4804.
You can remain anonymous and they're offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

First Look: BlackBerry 10 vs. iPhone 5

It's no secret to anyone interested in smartphones. For the past couple of years, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has had some issues keeping up with the likes of iOS and Android. Now though, it's the moment BlackBerry fans have been waiting for. Today marks the release of the all new BlackBerry 10 OS and to go along with it, the announcement of two brand new devices running that OS. The first device, a full touch screen experience called the BlackBerry Z10 will soon be hitting the market followed up later this year by a full QWERTY version dubbed the BlackBerry Q10.

The fearless leader of CrackBerry Nation, Kevin Michaluk, has had a BlackBerry 10 device in his hands for the past week and just attended the launch event in NYC, bringing iMore readers back a first look at the BlackBerry Z10 device. It's still too early to say if this will be a home run for RIM, but competition in this market is good and it helps keep things balanced. Check out the video above and let us know your thoughts on it all in the comments. If you want to see more, be sure to head on over to CrackBerry and read their full review.

Stocks drop as economy put brakes on stock rally

(AP) ? Worries about the economy have slowed a January stock rally.

After a month of impressive gains that brought the Dow within 200 points of a record, the markets have paused this week. Stocks started the day lower Wednesday after a report showed that the U.S. economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter. That decline extended after the Federal Reserve said that it would continue to try to boost growth through a bond-buying program designed to keep borrowing costs down.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 44 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 13,910.42, logging only its second decline in nine days. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 6 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,501.96, its biggest decline since Dec. 28. The Nasdaq composite fell 11 points to 3,142.31.

The U.S. economy shrank from October through December for the first time since the recession ended, hurt by the biggest cut in defense spending in 40 years, fewer exports and sluggish growth in company stockpiles, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

The Fed acknowledged that the economy is still struggling to regain momentum, in a statement it released after its two-day policy meeting. The central bank said that growth had "paused in recent months," and while it was taking no new action, it would keep buying $85 billion of bonds a month.

"The Fed didn't really say anything out of the ordinary, so you got the reaction you should've had in the morning," said Joe Saluzzi a co-founder at brokerage firm Themis Trading. "When you've spent this much money trying to prop up an economy and you still come up with a negative print, that's bad news."

Still, stocks remain on track for a great January.

The Dow Jones average has surged 6.2 percent since the start of the year, climbing close to 14,000 and within touching distance of its record level. The S&P 500 has gained 5.3 percent this month, close to its highest level in more than five years. Investors bought stocks after lawmakers reached a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" and on optimism the U.S. housing market is recovering and the jobs market is slowly healing.

U.S. gross domestic product, the volume of all goods and services produced, contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter. That's a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter.

"To ignore this is folly," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. "Certainly, this market could continue to move forward, but ignoring the fundamentals is not something I'd counsel my clients to do."

Positive company earnings reports helped offset the disappointing news about the economy and stem a bigger decline.

Amazon jumped $12.41, or 4.8 percent, to $272.76 after the world's biggest online retailer showed improving profit margins when it posted fourth-quarter earnings late Tuesday. Boeing, currently scrambling to fix battery problems that have grounded its 787 Dreamliner planes, gained 94 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $74.59 after it reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. Rising profits from commercial jets offset a smaller profit from defense work.

A private survey showed Wednesday that U.S. businesses increased hiring in January compared with a revised December reading. Payroll processor ADP said that employers added 192,000 jobs in January.

Traders and investors will now turn their focus back on to company earnings and Friday's nonfarm employment report.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, fell 1 basis point to 1.99 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves Wednesday:

? Chesapeake Energy rose $1.14, or 6 percent, to $20.11 after the company said late Tuesday that its embattled CEO Aubrey McClendon will leave the company this spring.

? Avery Dennison, a packing materials company, rose $2.30, or 6.4 percent, to $38.44 after it posted fourth-quarter earnings that beat analysts' expectations and said it was selling two of its business units to CCL industries for $500 million. The company will use the proceeds of the sale to buy back stock and make additional pension contributions.

? Copano Energy, a natural energy company, rose $4.90, or 14.8 percent, to $38.03 after the company said that it had agreed to be acquired by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners for about $3.2 billion in stock.

? MeadWestvaco, a packaging company, fell $1.30, or 3.9 percent, to $31.63 after the company reported earnings that fell short of analysts' expectations.
